Asher lives 7 Mi miles south of Joplin on his farm, and after husking his corn crop, he goes to walnut groves and gets his wagon full of nuts. With 60 bushels of nuts in the wagon, Asher has been known to go at a trot, up hill and down, owing to his wonderful physical strength. Heis a single man.Asher is 40 years of age and has pulled a wagon ever since he was 9 years old. He has no horses at his farm but does the plowing by getting into the harness and with a boy helper guiding the plow he turns furrows in the fields.“I don't need a horse,” said Asher, as he wandered into the Tribune office : last night. “I kin pull the wagon by myself, and if I want to go apv place, why I can walk. Yep, I wear the horseshoes on the soles of my shoes and mule shoes on the heels. They keep me from slippin’, but weigh over four pounds each.”Asher can be found at the Auditorium skating rink every night, practicing skating. “I haint had on ice skates fer over 18 years, and these pesky things slip so,” he said. “I’m practicing for the Thanksgiving day doin’s at the rink and I am after the prize. I am going to pull a wagon and load, both weighing a Tialf ton, and I reckon that ^/jU be comicalenough win the prize.”Hearing of Asher, several saloon men have decided to provide a unique contest, being a wheelbarrow race from Sixth and Main streets to Eighteenth and Main streets, to be Thanksgiving day in the afternoon.
