Dave Cooper Finishes50-Mile RunA Cumberland athlete, Dave Cooper, was one of 225 out of 303 starters to finish last Saturday’s 22nd annual JFK 50-Mile Run, covering the grueling course in 11 hours, 37 minutes,51 seconds. He placed 182nd overall.Jim Pellon, of Encino, Calif., the 1983 runnerup, finished first in 6:18:56 — winning by more than 11 minutes over second place finisher Dave Horton, of Lynchburg, Va., in 6:30:02.Two-time defending champion Mike Spinnler, a Hagerstown native who is now cross country coach at Eastern Kentucky University, dropped out at the halfway point because of a knee injury.Pellon’s girlfriend, Teri Gerber, of Encino, was the women’s division champion with a time of 6:50:56 that shaved about seven minutes off the women’s course record she set last year. fCooper, who is member of the Queen City Striders, was the only local runner competing this year in the ultramarathon which is run over parts of the Appalachian Trail, CO Canal towpath, and roads in Washington and Frederick counties.
