Last year was a perfect example with the Beavers barely taking home a 69-66 decision at Mayville after blasting the Comets earlier at Bemidji 107-60. The two teams will play the return game this year at Bemidji Dec. 19.Bemidji went into this campaign with high hopes after finishing last year at 16-8. The Beavers won all eight pre-conference starts before splitting their last 16 openings. They were 5-7 in league play, dropping all six games on the raod. Five of the losses came by six or fewer points. With only forward Randy Gross graduating, the prospects for this season looked extremelySenior Larry Bunnell, tallest of the returning vets at 6-7, will step into the pivot at the start. Bunnell averaged 10 points a game last winter with his most effective shot a 15-20 foot jumper. He also is not a strong board man, averaging less than five a game last winter and has been extremely foul prone in the past. Should he get into early foul problems, he will probably be shifted to the outside and replaced at center by either soph Dave Dahlberg (6-6) or freshman Steve Vogel (6-7). Dahlberg is more of an inside operator than Vogel though both played the pivot in high school as did Bunnell.Starting forwardsOpening at forwards will be juniors Jim Allen (6-5) and Todd Fore (6-3) who jumps with men three inches taller.Neither was a consistent pointmaker last winter with Allen averaging 6-2 and Fore 5.8, Hutchins hopes, however, that with the added year’s ex-nerience one or both willopponents. Through the years his varsity squads have made full use of nine to ten players on a regular basis and there will be no change this winter. The alternates, in addition to Dahlberg, figure to be Tom Peffer (6-3 sr) and transfer Dave Hetrick (6-6 jr) up front with Tyrone Terrill (5-11 jr) and Craig Kullberg (6-2 jr) outside. Kullberg, Peffer and Terrill were alternate regulars last winter. Terrill and Kullberg are steady performers with Terrill an excellent feeder and Kullberg tenacious on defense. Peffer can play both inside and out. Hetrick, who started at Bemidji in 1971 with Kopetka as freshmen, returns after a two year absence.Another soph transfer, Karlstad’s Jim Musburger (6-3) also seems likely to see heavy action as the season progresses.Three other graduates of last winter’s freshman squad will play mostly with the junior varsity this winter.Don Hubbell (5-11) and Skip Dolan (5-11). Vogel will play with the varsity only tonight but should see J.V. action as well during the year.Other frosh are Blackduck’s Tom Gilstad (6-2), Steve Gunderson (6-5), DaveHanson (6-4), Scott Meyerson (6-3), Jim Swanson (6-5) and Duane Vandenberghe (6-4). Six other freshmen and two sophomores were cut. After tonight’s game, the Beavers travel to Superior Dec. 30 and face a two day trip to Illinois Wesleyan and Millikin Dec. 2-3 before returning for the home opener with Bethel Dec. 6. The four road games are the most the team will face in a row this year. Last season, Bemidji played on the road 14 out of 16 games in mid-season.
