C., a distance of more than 4,000 miles. The two Air Force veterans plotted their kayak odyssey while still in the service in Germany. They pooled their finances and purchased the kayak in Germany for $400. They shipped it to the United States and then took it with them by bus across country to the Oregon starting line. The adventurous trip took them up theColumbia River, along a long portage in Montana, then down die Missouri and Mississippi rivers, up the Ohio, Mononga-hela and Cheat rivers, across the Alleghenies by portage, thence down the Potomac to the nation’s capital,At the end of the journey, they were welcomed by Mr. West Virginia, Arch A, Moore of Glen Dale, of course. Why did they pursue this adventurous trail? For the same reason the intrepid mountain climbers scale the highest peaks. Because they are there; because they are a challenge. The kayak trip is of local importance because Jimmy’s father, Ray, works in the machine shop of the Strip Steel Department of Weirton Steel Division and resides at Wheeling Island.
