WINNIPEG FREE PRESS, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21. 1964Investigation Long OverdueAlexanderBy FRED COLLINSThe president of the Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association says he welcomes a federal investigation into contracts signed by Winnipeg youngsters to play organizedhockey.H. B. (Bob) Alexander was commenting on a story byCURLING ICE AVAILABLE4 SHEETSSaturdays 1 to 3 p.m.CONTRACT FOR BALANCE OF SEASONiPhone R. Courts at 222-1414 or W. Wyatt at 222-9237.Free Press Ottawa correspondent Victor Mackie which reported the federal combines branch investigation. The investigation, which was ordered Friday, was prompted by a complaint from David Orlikow (NDP— Winnipeg North) about the practice of signing 10-year-old boys to binding contracts before they can play in the Greater Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association.Mr. Orlikow’s complaint probably is a result of the case involving two boys, George Forgie and Bill Fraser. Both boys played last season in the GWMHA and their requests for transfer to Fiin Flon junior Bombers have been blocked by the MAHA.Under the setup which now exists between the ManitobaJunior Hockey League and the GWMHA, Forgie belongs to Braves and Fraser,- the Monarchs. The MAHA, in blocking the requests for transfers, acted under its constitution.Mr, Alexander says he objects to the present system.“Perhaps the investigationwill clear the air. I think such an investigation was long overdue,*' he said. ' ,I am a firm believer the day will come when the National Hockey League will not be able to touch boys until they have finished their junior eligibility.1*With this in mind, the Manitoba branch of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association proposed a committee within the CAHA to examine the existing professional-amateur agreement. The pro-am agreement is a marriage, financial ard otherwise, between the NHL and CAHA.The Manitoba branch's proposal called for an immediate “comprehensive study of the agreement. The mechanics of the study were designed by Mr Alexander. The committee, which will report back to the annual meeting of the CAHA next May, is under Art Potter of Edmonton. Sub - chairmen, one from the east and another from-the w e s t, are Lloyd Pollock of Windsor, Ont., and Fred Page of Port Arthur.Four branch presidents, Mr. Alexander, Dr. L. Mar-golis of B.C., W. Edgar Pet-* erson of N.B., and C. G (Pat)Patterson of Ont., also serveon the committee. The first meeting of the committee was held two weeks ago at Regina. It could mean, that with the findings of the federal investigation and the CAHA's committee, amateur hockey may soon be free of all professional influence.Mr. Alexander, commenting on this belief, feels “It's time we (amateurs) stood on our own two feet. However, I do believe we should maintain a liaison with them (the NHL)/' •The NHL annually pours $40,000 into the coffers of the CAHA. A percentage oE this is used for administration of amateur hockey’s governing body. Each branch then receives $3,000.BOB ALEXANDER
