STAR-STUDDED HISTORYWhere did it all start? As a club team in 1960. Three years late^ soccer became a varsity sport and has never faltered. Though some years have been better than others, BC has never had a losing season. This is the 12th straight season of winning soccer for the Ravens. Alone, this is an amazing accomplishment. Add a few conference records, district titles and trips to Area II playoffs and it becomes nothing short of magnificent. Soccer began under Richard Wittmann, who coached the three undefeated club teams through the 1962 season. Three seasons without a loss convinced the college that soccer players were in earnest and the varsity program was installed. Bill Samuels led the Ravens to 7-0-1 and 4-3-1 records in ’63 and ’64. Tom Colwell, now head basketball coach and athletics director at the college, coached the Ravens through five winning seasons, including die championship of the Mo-Kan Conference in 1966 and 1967. Present Head Coach Terry Hanson took over in 1970 and has taken the last three teams, *72, ’73 and ’74, to the Area II playoffs after capturing the District 10 title. This year -- he and the Ravens took another big step, adding the crown of the Area II playoffs to their memoirs.Through those years the Ravens have posted a 81-35-6 record, a 70 per cent winning average. This does not include this year’s fine 13-3-2 mark. Although the roster of the teams through thoseyears has consistently read like a St. Louis telephone directory, once in a while a whippersnapper slips in from across the river in Illinois or from Kansas City. There have been, in fact, a couple from back east, one from Venezuela and a surprise package from Florida. In the record book, Ron Horvath of the 1964 through ’67 teams holds the most career goals mark with 48 but many of the records were updated by last year’s Ravens. Most Season goals belongs to Tom Gorczyca of that team with 24 in 16 games; also Gorczyca’s most goals in one game, six against William Jewell; most season assists, tied by John Schindler and Dave Sielfleisch at 11; most Raven goals in season, 89 in 16 games; most goals in game, 13 against Jewell and Linden wood; most season shutouts, eight in 16 games; fewest season goals scored against Ravens, 11 in 16 games; longest Raven winningstreak, nine, and longest unbeaten streak 12. One other recordonly belongs to a previous year and that was ten shutouts by Greg Vitello of the 1966-67 season for the most career shutouts by a goalie. TTiis is the great background for the Ravens who head for St. Louis next week. May success continue to ride on the toe of. their shoes.
