winners:The high school wrestling season takes its first step forward this week with a handful of opening matches around the area. Only a half dozen wrestling forms have been returned to date which means that other matchesmay be set.Thief River Falls will invade Fertile Friday night while Fergus Falls hosts Fargo South Saturday. On Monday, East Grand Forks opens at home with Fosston. Most Region teams wait until next week of early December before getting into action.Walker, Mahnomen,C'rookston and Greenbush will go into this season as defending district titlists while Keinidji captured the region crown afterfinishing second toCrookston in its conference meet and second again in the District 29 tournament.Last season’s top ten rated teams were Fertile, Mahnomen, Park Rapids, Greenbush, Crookston, Bemidji, Bagley, Blackduck, Walker and Oklee.With this week, we begin our pre-season look at regional teams:ADA—The Vikings finished 1-10 last year but expect great improvement. Coach Mike Schueller has eight regulars back among 11 letter winners and 10 members of his district tournament squad. Two, Kim Sorenson and Tim Merkins, will be sidelined until later in the season. The returnees bear glittering records topped by Jeff Dale (18-0), Leon Sulerud (21-2), Kevin Lindberg (18-2-1), Darrell Larson (16-4-2), Mark Broden (16-4-1) and Don Morvig (13-4-2). Others are Mark Langved. Robin Mahlum and Jeff Kron-schnabel. Nelson islooking to patch at 98. 105 and 119.FOSSTON-The Greyhounds lost district winner Steve Hilliard and veteran Tom Halland but have eight starters back from their tournament team including district place winners. Mike McCall, Alan Olson and Tim Tangen.REMER—The Eagles grow stronger each year and have six starters back from a 6-5-1 year. There is good depth from 105 though 145. Remer has added Crosby and International Falls to its slate and will host an invitational tournament Dec. 21. Top performers are Alan Pearson (105), Greg Hinz (Hwt), Dave Gish (126), Jeff Peterson(119), Kevin Carr (138) Jeff Simons (105) and Steve Gish (145).
