CRUSH HAMBURG FOR EASY 35-0 TITLE---Cardinals Are True ChampionsEver see a football coach that was afraid to enter his own team’s dressing room?Well, there was Doug Black, coach of Radeliffe. the first Class A football champs ever, standing outside the Cardinal dressing room after their convincing 35-0 victory over Hamburg Saturday in Albert City.Seems as though Black thought lie might get a good dousing if he stepped inside and he didn't want to ruin his red Cardinal sweater. It's brought him good luck all season long.( “Have you been in there yet? a fan asked. “No,” Black answered, “go in there and tell them it was a good ball game. The kids did great, but I’m staying out of there.A few minutes later, after a group of newsmen had gathered around the coach, he walkedinside the locker room surrounded by the protection of the press.Great doesn't describe Radcliffe’s performance Saturday, especially after their 34-33 squeeze the week before over Waco (Olds).STEAL SEVEN PASSESThe Cardinals made a shambles of Hamburg's feared passing attack while ramming the ball down the Wildcats' throats on the ground.I didn’t figure we’d hold them scoreless, Black commented. “Our secondary did a great job intercepting seven passes.Denny Ostrem stole four of those tosses and the senior 150-pounder said that the Wildcats were just “flipping them for grabs. They just kind of floated them. The Cardinal line blew open Hamburg’sdefense for 324 yards, the longest run being an 8T-yarder by Daryl Eide with 15 seconds left in the game. “The line blocking was so much better, noted Eide. “Our line was something tremendous, there’s no way to describe it.“It's the best feeling you could have, echoed Hod Imsland, senior end and linebacker. We went out and played with our hearts. When we hit somebody we just kept blocking, we didn’t let up.BEYOND HIS DREAMS Black said he was confident his team could take the title, but Saturday’s score was beyond his dreams. “I've never seen them like they were the past two weeks, they were just ready to go.Jerry Kielsmeier agreed with Black and summed up many of the players' thoughts about victory. It’s about the best thing that’s ever happened to me.“We were confident we could win, but we knew we’d have to work for it. We expected that any team in the playoffs would be hard to beat,” The Cardinals started off slowly Saturday, just as they had the week before against Waoo. The first score came midway through the second'period when Voigt scampered J8 yards after Paul Thompson hit Kim Bossard with a 14-yard pass.30-YARD BURST A short time later, Kevin Wyklc, last week’s hero, got loose on a dazzling 30-yard burst after catching another Thompson toss. With 0:33 left in the third quarter, Ron Lee pounded over from the two and at the beginningof the fourth period Voigt scored his second touchdown on an ll-yard jaunt.During this time Hamburg could not mount a serious threat. In fact, the Wildcats penetrated only once in the second half beyond the Cardinal 30. The Cardinals held the Wildcats to only 38 yards rushing and 90 yards in the air.Black attributed part of the Cardinalsdefensive play to last week’s game, We got a lot of practice against Waco and that probably helped us. No one has thrown the ball against us like this.MOVING AT WILL For a lime in the fourth quarter, Radcliffe moved the ball almost at will against Hamburg. Thompson had a touchdown called back with a 15-yard penalty, but three plays later Voigt tallied to make the score 28-0.Commenting on the playoff system and bad weather which caused the game to be moved from Carroll, Black said, the trouble you have to go through is trivial. For a bunch of young men, it's the greatest experience.Black said his club was able to practice outside this past week for only a half hour each for two nights,The players agreed with Black that the turning point in Radcliffe's season was the 15-12 win over Alden. “That Alden game really helped, We got things together after that,” Black commented. The Cardinals will lose 15 seniors off of a squad of 33 and one statement by Black summed up Ins feelings about them. “That’s a great bunch of kids.
