Lions Roar PastBy WENDELL REDDEN Glob* Sports EditorSophomore playmaker Carl Tyler led a balanced attack with 14 points, doled out nine assists and pulled down eight rebounds Wednesday night as Missouri Southern opened its 1981-82 basketball season with an easy 89-56 victory over Harris-Stowe College of St. Louis before 1,200 fans in Robert Ellis Young Gymnasium.Tyler also contributed four steals as the Lions’ ball-hawking man-to-man defense took the ball away from the Hornets 16 times. Junior center Willie “Sweet Pea” Rogers had five thefts.Southern coach Chuck Williams cleared his bench in the rout and 12 members of the 14-man varsity squad contributed to the offensive effort.In addition to Tyler’s 14 tallies, reserve Greg Blissit chipped in with 13 and Rogers and senior forward Rick Caver had 12 apiece. Each also pulled down five missed shots.Keith Slater, a 6-1 freshman forward, led the outmanned Hornets with 17 points. He also pulled down 10 rebounds as the visitors held a 42-39 advantage on the boards.Reserve guard Jerry Ousley had 14 points and seven boardsfor Harris-Stowe and 6-5 senior Ron Banks chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds. John Rochester, a 6-5 senior, counted nine caroms.Both teams started slowly. Southern finally broke the scoreless tie at 17:54 on two free throws by the 6-7, 215-pound Rogers. The Lions’ first field goal came 46 seconds later on a 15-foot jumper by the 6-3 Caver.“We were a little nervous at the outset.” admitted Southern Coach Chuck Williams. “But our defense picked us up and, after getting our second wind, we started moving up and down the floor better and doing some things offensively.”Ousley’s 15-footer with 17 minutes left put Harris-Stowe on the board but the Lions reeled off seven straight points — four by Tyler and three by Caver — for an 11-2 lead.After fielders by Ousley and Slater, used a three-point play by Caver and Brown’s 18-footer for a 16-6 bulge with 12 minutes to go.Southern then outscored the Hornets 14-4 during the next 4 .43 to open a 30-10 spread. Two steals each by Rogers and Tyler keyed the spurt.Williams went to his bench at that point and Harris-Stowe ralHarris-Stowe in Opener, 89-56lied to pare the halftime deficit to 37-22.Southern picked up the tempo quickly in the second half, using steals by Tyler and Rogers to open a 43-22 advantage with less than two minutes gone. The Lions maintained an 18-to-21-point lead for the next four minutes before goals by Blissit, Rogers and Virgil Parker and two Blissit charities pushed the lead to 60-34 with 12:50 left.The Lions opened a 72-40 bulge with 9.43 left as Tyler zipped a pass through the Harris-Stowe defense to freshman Jeff Jones for a layup.Reserves finished and staked Southern to its biggest lead. 89-54, with 0:20 left.“We have some depth on this team,” Williams said. “We’re still working on a player or two to come through and give us more depth.”Southern shot 49.3 percent from the field, hitting 35 of 71. The Lions were 19 of 25 from the free throw line for 76 percent. Harris Stowe, 4-2.The Lions will go after their second victory Saturday in a 7.30 p.m. game at Evangel College in Springfield.
