This was during the 1966 season.'Hus had to lie one of the toughest teams that UC Davis had played the entire season. The young Broncos came to this game with ideas of their own about who was going to leave the field as a winner.Matter of fact, in the first half of the game they made it look as if they were going to run away with the game, as the well oiled machine captain by Rick Cabral moved so smoothly through the first half that before the Aggies knew what had happened, they were down 20-0. Try as they would, UCD Jast could not gain any momentum to get within the striking distance of Bronco goal line. The furtherest that the Aggies managed to penetrate into the Santa Clara territory in the first half was to the Broncos’ 32 yard line.Statistics of the first half of play are rather revealing of how badly UCD fared. They gained only 59 yards in the air and had a minus six yards rushing. Santa Clara on tlie other hand came up with 103 yards on the ground and 183 yards in the air for a total of 286 yards in the first half. leading this well planned attack were flanker Dennis Hooten and fullback Alex Damascus. What Damascus could not get on the ground, Hooten more than amply provided for, in the air. Dennis Hotten should think about becoming a doctor if he has not settled on any definite major. Without doubt he had the surest pair of hands on that field yesterday. Any ball which was thrown his way was caught without exception. He even tried carrying the ball on the ground and moved through the Aggies without much difficulty. There was no question about the first part of the game, it was all Santa Clara's. But then, again, there was no question in the approximately 500 fans’ minds who controlled the ball the second half and what is more important, won the game.Quarterback Dave Price of UCD was the ingredient that sparked the team into action.£Aggie receiver seems to be doing a juggling act withUC Davis JuniorJUGGLING ACTa football in yesterdays action to Toomey field where varsity defeated Santa Clara to remian unbeaten this season. They have a 6 0 record. Coming in to help the receiver is Rick Hennes.GOOD GAIN — Rick Hennes of UCD does some fancy stepping as he carries the ball for a long yardage in yesterday's JV's game between the Aggies and the Santa Clara. Aggs won the contest 22-20 as they erased the 20 0 half time deficit to end their season undefeated. With s4*v«thI .seconds to go in the third period, he tossed a scoring strike to tight end Skip Mezger for three yards and a TD. Fullliark Mike Buckley converted for two points and the score stood 20-fl Early in the fourth period, lYiee again manuevered his team into Santa Clara terriotry and then scampered for another TD from a two yard line. The defense suddenly found itself, and bottled up; the Santa Clara rolling offense.not Is- stopp'd as they quickly scored again on a52 yard T!) pass to Henries to tie up the game asm 20Rather than kick for a jioint, which tliey werenot sure of getting, quarterback Price rolled out to his left and fired a quick pass to Mezger whowas one step ahead of his defenlt;k;r and UCD went ahead 22-20, a score which was still on the scoreboard as the gun ending the game sounder!.Santa tiara’s points came early in the game. They received the kick-off and then marched 78 yards in 10 plays for their first score, quarterback Cabral doing the honors by sweeping around his right end for the six points, with only 3 46 gone in the game. The next time they took possession of the ball, they took a little more time as they marched without any difficulty for their second ID from their own 11 yard line in 14 plays.Their last score came early in the second quarter when fullback Damascus bulled over for a TD from the three yard line to make it 20-0 half time score. In the statistics department, fullback MikeBuckley was the leading ground gainer for Aggs as he carried 20 times for 66 yards. Quarterback Dave Price attempted five passes and completed four of them for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Starting quarterback, Bruce Davey of UCD passed 21 times, completing seven of them for 68 yards. For Santa Clara, Alex Damascus was the leading ground gainer as he rushed for 97 yards in 22 attempts. Quarterback Cabral completed 18 out of 40 passes for 291 ayrds. In total yardage, Santa Clara had twice as many yards 449 to Davis 260, but after all, it is not the yardage that counts, but what the score board shows. In this game it showed UCD winning 22-20.Fight resultsBy THE ASSOCIATED PRESSCOIjOGNE, Germany—Juergen Blin, 195, Hamburg, knocked out Sylvester Dullaire, 180, Hartford, Conn., 8.PHII-ADELPHIA—Rico Arrendondo, Mexico, stopped Sammy Goss, Trenton, N.J., 5, featherweights.TIJUANA, Mex.—Erubey Carmona, 131, Mexico, stopped Arturo Loneli, 134, Mexico, 7.
