The bout lasted but 3 8seconds and it took Bates nearly 15minutes to recover from the knockout.Bates outweighed Clarke fully forty-five pounds and was a slight favorite over the ‘‘Fighting Ghost.”Clarke began the light by landingthe lefts and Bates swung a ^right,apparently knocking his man to the ropes and having him groggy. As he approached closely to Clarke the latter swung a terrific right uppercut to Bates jaw, sending the local man to the opposite side of the ring. Hewas counted out and carried fromthe ring by his seconds. There were but five blows struck, four by Clarke and one by Bates.Clarke and his manager, .JimmieBronson, left for Joplin last nightafter the fight was finished.
