Triad High GraduateSharon Petty Named MEJ’s Sportsman of the MonthEdwardsville High School field hockey coach Sharon Petty has been named the Metro East Journal's ‘Sportsman of the Month' for October.Mrs. Petty guided the Tigers to the state meet this fall with a perfect 13-0 regular season record. In its first 13 games, Ed-wardsville posted 11 shutouts and outscored its opponents, 57-2.The Tigers eventually lost to defending champion New Trier West in the state meet, but the Edwardsville girls still finished with the school's best record ever, 13-1. Petty assumed the Tigers' head coaching duties in 1974 and put together a 3-2-1 mark in her first season. Lasting the title game, 3-2.To win the ‘Sportsman of the Month' award, she outdistanced Big Red running backs Wayne Morris and Terry Metcalf along with several other area sports figures.Mrs. Petty is the former Sharon Mersinger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Mersinger of Troy. She is a 1965 graduate of Triad High School and a '69 graduate of SIU-Edwardsville.RECORD HOLDERSThe National Football League record for most consecutive victories is 18, held jointly by the
