THU O IK f* IKK SPORTS SC EXE»T ritonBv DAVID DE MALAwAttention officials of the five junior college post-season bowl games, 13th ranked Triton College of River Grove is ready, willing, and able to consider allbids.^Triton smashed Joliet Junior College 43-11 at Proviso East Saturday, The 43-point production was the result of what Joliet head coach Jerry Yost called Triton’s “poor offense. This poor offense” gained 361 yards on the ground and 169 yards through the air for a total offensive production of 530 yards gained and 43 points scored.THE TRITON DEFENSE wasmagnificent, again. It allowed just 71yards rushing and 42 yards through the air and gave Joliet just four first downs.Joliet received the opening kick and after an initial first down, was stopped ©Jjiii by the Warrior defense. Forcing av.hort nunt. the Triton offense went toawork. With the aid of two Mark Carlson toA! Curry completions, the Warriors moved the ball to the Joliet 25. Walter Anderson, playing his last regular season game forTriton, went 25 yards over left guard and with Gary Hill’s conversion, it was 7-0.Mike Thorne went one yard for the next touchdown and Triton led 13 -0.Heads up defensive play by Rich Becker and Art Mohorn forced Joliet to punt again. Triton took the ball on the 31. Carlson, also playing his last game atQuarterback, engineered a seven-minute 14-play drive as Debbs carried over for the 19th point.Joliet seemed to have a drive underway, picking up two consecutive first downs late in the first half, but Mike White stepped in front of a Joliet pass and the interception ended the threat. It took the ‘lpoor offense” of Triton nine plays to move the ball 95 yards asAnderson scored his second touchdown.Just before the end of the third quarter, Gary Hill, who the week before set a Triton record with a 37-yard field goal, booted one from 21 yards out and Triton led 29-0.Perhaps the best play of the game, and the best catch of the year, took place at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Carlson, dropping back and seeing all of his receivers covered, began to scramble. Running away from the play, he threw the ball 50 yards in the air and flanker Joe Coco nan te reached higher then the crowd of defenders that surrounded him andcame down with the football and a 40-yard touchdown. While returning a Warrior kiekoff, Joeliet's Ken Kennedy ran into Triton’s Pat Conley. The jarring tackle shook the ball loose and safety Mike Nolan recovered for Triton on the Joliet 35.Anderson, Thorne and Carlson each carried once putting the ball on the Joliet five. Mike Thorne scored the touchdown on a five-yard run and Gary Hill kicked the 43rd and final Triton Doint.STATISTICSv\ C: S.r c *- lt;2 r '' \ A ^- -• V . 1 —* —-rW-s v c G b~ * U r f Y o r C- • A n c.; - v C ^ ; ►y7^;'.,-.; ^ * *• - - V- ^ 'r: 't. - . rrac;oc-- w k./► --• c.-tcJC244-436:71169421710115 818-54-* «*NI 11/7-39.71V _ ' * A.3-25 452-306 10! 4 J0 00 0T•cerson 25 yc'ncrne•; r _ c:; eg *.HOW THEY SCORED First Quarterr jr ;Hii! kick ' y a run •• k : c k r.0 GOOC )Second Quarter•Dedns 1 yd. rur- y-ck nogood)Thtrd Quarler A«orrsor 5 r C rur ; H si i k'ck '2; vc field goai . .2 37 Fourth Quarter Cogorante,- 40 yd. pass from Carlson (pass fa led : 14 : 36, 35 0T - Tnorne.. 5 ya. run (Smith, pass from Carlson 37 43 0TTTT10:06, 7 0 5:30, 13-012:55, W09:25, 26-0seeksbowlbidTriton's Gary Hill (65) puts his foot into an extra point during the Warriors' romp over JolietSaturday at Proviso East. Well Fenwick High School is faced with thatproblem. In the Catholic League two varsity basketball campaigns are waged at the same time. The two separate leagues are called Heavyweights and Lightweights, but height not weight is one of the criteria that decides in which league a player is to perform.John Cahill, a 5-10 eager who averaged 18 rebounds a game, won’t be able to play with the Lightweights this year. In order to be a Lightweight a player has to stand not taller than 5-9.Cahill’s loss is sure to hurt us,” saysFriar coach Ed Galvin. “He was one of the tall reasons why Fenwick’s Lightweights are defending champions.“You see in this league the toughest kids who are tie best rebounders usually win,” relates Calvin. Using Cahill as a measuring rod, one can readily see why the Friars compiled a 24-4 record last year. In addition to being tough on the basketball court, Cahill was also tough on the gridiron. He was all-conference on both the offensive and defensive teams in football.“We will also lose Jeff Norris. We fell that Jeff will be able to help the Heavyweights out a lot,” explains Galvin.Galvin predicts that the Catholic League will be loaded with competition this yearCall 383-6880 for circulation64as in years past.“Three of the teams will have at least one boy around 6-10. We'll have Greg Dec,who s grown seven inches in the last twoyears but he has a lot of filling out to do,”says Galvin. He also added that Dec doesn’t have much game experience but that the coaching staff is counting on the 6-7 junior to develop into a pretty good ballplayer.Meanwhile the Fenwick Heavyweights can count on 6-6 John Ply, Bob Bresnahan, and guards 6-5 Henry Russ and 6-1 Bob Rosemeyer. Jeff Carpenter, who started as a freshman last year is expected to be a tremendous asset when he is healthy.Depending on the situation the Friar defense will vary. Basically, though Fenwick will utilize a man-to-man attack.Noting that Brother Rice, Hales Fransiscan, and defending champ Gordon Tech will all be strong teams to contend with Galvin is pleased that the league schedule doesn’t start until after Christmas. This gives the coaches a chance to look at the players more thoroughly before they are thrown into league action.November 17, 1971
