2 YOUTHS CLOSE TO WASHINGTON4,000-Mi. Kayak Trip Nears EndHARPERS f e r r y, w,Va. (UPI) — Two bearded young men who have paddled and pushed a kayak all the way from Astoria, Ore., said they would begin traveling on the Potomac River today and expect to end their trip Friday afternoon in Washington.Jim Curnes, 24, of Wheeling, W. Va., and John Davidson, 22, of Carlisle, Pa., said they ran into a shortage of water on the north fork of the Potomacwhich extended their expected arrival time a day. They had hoped to end their trip today.They camped just belowthis historic community Wednesday nigh t. The north and south forks of the Potomac join here and the youthful adventurers said they expected no more trouble with shallow water.The 4,000-mile trip will end al the Jefferson Memorial, where Rep. Arch Moore. R-W. Va., and parents of the two kayak enthusiasts plan to be on hand.Engineer BlamedFor Rail DisasterRIO DE JANEIRO (UPI)-The engineer of a jam-packed commuter train which ran four red lights was blamed today for Wednesday’s head-on collision with another train that claimed 32 lives and injured at least 350 commuters.
