No. 9 Bessemer City at No. 8 Mt. Airy1AA West■ Records: Bessemer City (4-7), Mt. Airy (8-3)■ Last meeting: Mt. Airy won 27-7 in the Yeiiow Jackets’1982 season opener.■ Since 1972: Mt. Airy leads the series 1-0.■ Breakdown: Mt. Airy took third place in the Northwest Conference behind East Surry and Elkin and the Bears could be a good matchup for Bessemer City, which lost three of its games by eight or fewer points. However, Mt. Airy has proven it can hang with the best as the Bears were the only team to defeat West Wiikes (No. 2 seed in 2A West) during the regular season. That happened by a count of 32-22 on Aug. 31. Bessemer City is making its first playoff appearance since 1994. The Yellow Jackets enter the game allowing 253 rushing yards per game, so their defense will have to tighten up if they want to make this postseason a memorable one.■ Key players: The Bears are led by Matt Reed (RB/LB), George Speight (FB/LB), Bryan Hayes (TE), Micah Chamberlain (QB), Sammy Gentry (WR), Michael Kerley (DL) and Drew George (DL). Bessemer City’s offensive weapons include quarterback/running back Deontae Davis, who has passed for 502 yards; running back Jermaine Gamble, who leads the Jackets with 781 rushing yards and six touchdowns; and receiver Lewico Sanders, who has caught 20 passes for 502 yards and scored 10 all-purpose touchdowns.
