Page 20 — TOE MESSENGER, Athens, Ohio - Wed., Nov. 16,1966Bulldogs Capture Eighth Loop TitleBy TOM METERSAthens High School, champions of the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League in football with * 6-1 loop mark, captured its second straight league title and the eighth in the school’s his tory. The eight titles leaves them four short of Jackson’s league leading total of 12 champion ships and just one shy of the nine which have been won by Middleport. Logan, who won the League in both 1963 and 1964, is fourth with seven titles.Balance around the league was pointed up by several factors this year. For one thing, with three weeks remaining on the league schedule, there were still seven of the eight teams that were in contention for a share of the title, and with just two weeks left, there were still four teams vying for top honors. As the final standings turned out, Athens captured first place and Gallipolis and Logan had to settle for a second-place tie, but those three teams could have wound up in a deadlock for first —which would have been only the third triple-tie in the league’s history and the first since 1939.This marked the first time since 1959 that the champion failed to go unbeaten in the league, and is only the second time in 19 years (the other was last year) that the second-place team lost more than one game.Jackson won the championship in 1959 with a 6-1 mark while Wellston was second at 5-1-1. Except for last year, one has to go back to 1947 to find a second-place team with two losses (last year three teams tied at 5-2 for second). Gallipolis won the league that year (7-0) and Logan was second (4-2-1).Individual scoring this year was led by a sophomore from Athens, Mike Goodwin. There were 59 different players who figured in the scoring this year, the most since there were 60 during the 1963 season. That figure has been matched or surpassed several times, including 1960 when 65 different players scored.Goodwin finished the league season with 52 points on eight touchdowns and four extra points. Kirby Oiler of Wellston was just behind Goodwin in the scoring with 48 points. He also had eight touchdowns but added no extra points.Goodwin may be the first sophomore to lead the league in scoring. There have been numerous occasions where a junior led the league. It marked the second straight year that Athens had taken individual honors, although last year they were divided between two boys — Dickest since Athens had 163 in 1956 The Bulldogs finished in third place in the standings, but led the league in offense that year.Defensively, Logan was the pace-setter this year with 40 points (just two points less than Athens), the highest since Logan allowed 44 in 1963. The previous year, Logan had led the league in offense allowing 66 points.Although there were no changes in the all-time SEOAL standings as far as positions were concerned, Athens pulled closer to Logan in the second and third spots. Jackson continues to lead in the standings.★ H *HM46 I'OOTH % 1.1. INDIVID! 41. HCORI.N lt;* ( Final I Nam* Tram TD Pst PRMike Goodwin. Athens .Kirby Oiler, Wellston ..Roger Estep.
