“MAJOR” TAYLOR TIES RECORD.Twice Rides a Mile at Philadelphia In 1.32, the Wonderful Time He Made There Last Saturday,I'llIHADKLPHIA, Nov 15—The figures of Jm 32s made by “Major** Taylor hint Saturday were tied by him twice today and In both attempts he broke the enorter records. These may not he applied for according to the rules, but the times w« re taken by timers who were tied at the close with the official timers.Taylor was determined today to do 3 m lt;Wsv 11 If pickups were made perfectly.No rider has made a record and tied It even once or approached it. In his second trial Taylor today tried a new feat. He made what are technically known as dying pickups, that is he dropped the coming team and mode a live or ten-yard run independently to the second team. Had he done this on the first trial the record would have been his by a second at least. In his first trial he lowered the half-mile and i three-quarter rnile records. In the second he lowered the one-quarter mile, the? one-third mile, tied the time made, formerly for the half-mile and lowered the previous three-quarter mil© record by one-fifth of a second.Taylor used a 14)8 gear today and a 23 pound wheel. He started his trials at 3.30. The (’rooks team started him and took him to the first quarter in 22 3-5s, the record being 22 2-Ss. At the third In 30 3-5« he was slow. A perfect pickup to the Hager quint was made, although it was what is known as a short pickup. His second third was made in 31 l-5s, the half mile being reached In 45 2-5s. The record for the distance is 45 4 5s by Taylor. The two-thirds were done In 3m I 2-5s and the three-quarters in lrn 8 4-5s. Here again he was Inside the record by 1 l-3». Pits finishing quarter In 23 3-5s made him tie his former figure** AJ1 watches had the same time. The time of the last third was 30 3-5s, -Before the second trial Taylor gave minute instructions to hbs pacemakers regarding the method of poking up. The leading team was to bo goihg at speed when the second team caught up Taylor said he would drop from the second team and run along the polo out to the front to catc h the other team. He again started with the Crooks team and went to tHc quarter in 22 1-5*. one-fifth second under record time. At the third, where the pickup was made, his time was 23 3-5«, a fifth second under the record. The Sager team was reached nicely, and at ihe half Taylor was tie with rilR former time, 45 2-59.
