By MIKE PICKENSwCourier sports writerOTTUMWA — Behind every successful basketball coach you can find a support staff of assistants, trainers and managers.Indian Hills Coach Terry Carroll s staff is one of those groups that quietly do their job with little recognition.Assisting Carroll with the coaching duties is Dick Moore, Mike Ca-paccio and Todd Ebelsheiser Sherry Heisdorffer is the secretary of student services and Sam Logan is the team managerMoore, 52, has been an instructor at Indian Hills since May ofl966 He graduated from Geneva High School and picked up his computer programming degree in Ottumwa. He worked a year in Chicago before receiving a chance to come back to Indian Hills where he has been ever since. Moore is an instructor-coordi-nator in the computer programming department.He has been a part of the basketball program since its inception six years ago Moore assisted Dick Jar-rett for three years before coming Carroll’s assistant.His main responsibility is keepingDick Moore Mike Capacciotrack of and reporting the team statistics. He also helps with floor coaching in practice and shares in other duties.I have always loved the game of basketball, Moore said. “It is a team-oriented sport and I like that aspect. I am a die-hard competitor and I thrive on competition. I love to win.Moore first began coaching in the club program at the college in 1973 which continued through 1985.“It is a notch above intramural basketball, Moore said. “We played the junior varsity teams of William Penn and Central and would also play various Bible colleges like Vennard I especially remember our last three yearswhen we won 51 and lost 13. We won the league title and also won the league tournament. I will always remember that.”Capaccio is in his third year at Indian Hills and is mainly involved with recruiting “Recruiting is a year round job, Capaccio said. “I am involved in marketing and information and work with the whole student body.Capaccio coached high school basketball for two years in Bismarck, N.D. before taking the head coaching job at McHenry Community College in Woodstock, Illinois for six years.Capaccio, who is 33 and lives in Ollie, lists hunting and fishing as his favorite pasttimes Ebelsheiser, 24, is back at Indian Hills after a four-year stint in the Navy.Ebelsheiser was a all-state player in Arvada, Colo, and attended the University of Southern Colorado his freshman year. While in Ottumwa working over the summer, Ebelsheiser says he was “conned” into staying and attending Indian Hills in his sophomore year. He was going to transfer to the University of Northern Colorado for his final two years but instead opted for theNavy where he became a search and rescue swimmer.After being injured in a swimming exercise in his final year, Ebelsheiser finished his stint in Virginia and contacted Carroll about working at Indian Hills. One thing led to another and Ebelsheiser started recruiting out East and helped land Thomas Barnes, Lorenzo Watkins and Stacy Fuller.“I have been fortunate to work with a lot of excellant coaches, Ebelsheiser said, My main duties are to assist Terry and put some little birds in his ear. After the season begins, I probably will do some scouting and recruiting.Logan, 20, is in his first year as manager for the Warriors.Logan graduated from Ottumwa High School in June and was manager of the boys basketball team for four years. He helped with track for two years and was a manager of the football team during his senior year.Logan’s main duties include taking care of the team’s equipment.
