Renae Hunting and Emily Thomson of Fort Madison, Burlington; (behind runners) coach Greg Leytem of DanvilleBlack, Schroeder, Leytem pickedBy Larry LockhartThe Hawk EyeThe selection of the girls first team and runners of the year were clear cut, but the bovs teams and coach of the year were decided by the narrowest of margins.Runners of the year are Chastine Black of Wapello and Chris Schroeder of Dan ville Schroeder ran brilliantly until a late-season injury slowed him and kept him from state.Black led a sophomore-laden Wapello team to a seventh place finish in the Class IA state meet, where she was the only area runner among the top 20 in dividuals in her class, finishing 17th.Danville's Greg Leytem was named coach of the year, edging Wapello’s Gary Pickering It wasn't a factor in the selec lion, but a measure of Leytem’s success was the letter The Huwk Eye received nominating him for the award. Signed by the 17 members of Danville’s boys and girls teams, the letter eloquently spelled out Leytem’s qualificationsHis biggest success came with the boys team, which returned only two lettermen but dominated area Class 1A teums and would have been competitive against most larger schools.Not only was Schroeder the area's best among the boys, teammate Robert W'hite was a first team selection and Jason Demuth w-as named to the second team.Rounding out the boys first team are Burlington sophomores Gus Phillips and Scott Sink and Fort Madison's Jeff Selby Schroeder is the only repeater from last year's first team, while Phillips moved up from the second team last fall.Black is joined by teammate Kristy Foor on the girls first team, while the Arrows landed Ivy Buster and Staci Dot son on the second team.The girls first team also includes state qualifiers Jenrn Block of Fort Madison and Emily Thomson of Mount Pleasant, and Mount Pleasant freshman Renae Hunting. Thomson is the only first team repeater, while Black and Foor moved up from last year’s second team.Rounding out the girls second team are three Mediapolis runners; Shelly Lambert, Tami Rohr and Ann Rumley.
