gordo Daily NewsSunday, November 14, 199911AKsinski isNew Mexico9tCheer Coachfthe YearChaparral cheerleading Coach Joy Kosinski was honored last month at the New Mexico Activities Association Spirit banquet in Albuquerque as Cheer Coach of the Year for the state of New Mexico.Kosinski has been the cheerleading coach at Chaparral Middle School for 23 years. Almost 200 girls have passed through the cheerleading program. The girls refer to their coach affectionately as “Mrs. K.”Kosinski is known for expecting high standards from the cheerleaders. Sheexpects excellent grades and character, and good skills and physical condition.Many of Kosinski’s cheerleaders go on to cheer at the high school level. A few have cheered for division one colleges, including Jennifer Miner at Michigan State, Cathy Arias at New Mexico State, and, currently, Fawna Pruiett, also at New Mexico State.When she accepted her award to a standing ovation, Kosinski said, “It means so much that you all would giveme this honor. Being from a middle school, and not going-to big competitions, I’m surprised many of you know who I am.Kosinski spoke about some of her former students, who are choosing to go into coach-' ing. Kristi Daugherty and, Stacy Rivera, the varsity and ‘ freshman coaches at Alamogordo High School, and Cathy Arias, who now coaches at Mayfield High School in Las Cruces, are former Chaparral cheerleaders. They were in the audience when Kosinski accepted her award.“We all know that there are a lot of headaches and sometimes the kids don’t like us too much,” said Kosinski. “And even though there isn’t any money in it, I will never regret all the young ladies that I have gotten to know and love. It’s so special, even after all these years, when I get a college graduation announcement, or a wedding invitation, or a birth announcement, from a student that I coached. I hope that means that thev still think ofWme and remember what I did for them when they were one ofmy cheerleaders.”.■
