The Spartans pressed all the way and although a flurry of fouls gave Hidge some shots at the defense in the second half and the turnovers on the press and IVpplc's hot hand.But1’the* •second1 half‘-was another story. Vicki Corle, who was working against Pepple. picked up her defensive play and shut the Spartan scoring ace down to one goal and apir of gou) shots in the second half.Vicki played much better defense in the second half and that was probably the key to the game.” Black commented.Ridge started to open a slim lead in the second half. By the end of the third quarter, during which the lead was traded frequently, Ridge opened a 40-37 lead.Dee Ringler hit a quick bucket to open the fourth period. Darlene Davis cameback with a fastbreak goal to make it a 42-39 contest, but the Spartans couldn’t get any closer.Wittmer scored, but then limped off the floor with 6:34 left. After she dominated the third quarter, it looked like McConnellsburg could get back into the game, but reserve Amy Catena pulled down a rebound only seconds after getting into the game. Brenda Rice hit a nice turnaround jumper with 6:00 left to give Ridge a 46-39 lead.Wittmer came back into the lineup, but seconds later, Vicki Corle crashed to the hardboards after making a steal. The game was halted fog, a few- minutes, as Black assistant Tim Winegardner helped her from the floor. She had a cut on the back of her head, but that didn’t stop thescrappy sophomore from coming back into the game after a minute of rest on the bench.When Darlene Davis fouled out with 3:30 left, that signalled the end of the Spartans' shot. Davis had stolen the bail all night, off everyone of the Lions, and was picking up the scoring as Pepple was shut off.The final three minutes, Ridge slowed the offense and McConnellsburg fouled. The Lions connected on several and Wittmer’s conversion of a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left were Ridge's final points. Pam Kerlin hit a final shot for the Spartans with : 10 left to cut the Lions’ margin to 56-48.Black had praise for his whole squad, but he pointed to Dee Ringler, who hustled at both ends of Ihe eourl. ‘‘She played good defense, in fact,1’ Black added, ‘‘it was her best game of the year.” Ringler also tossed in ll points, mostly on Ridge fast breaks.“11 was a very-very physical game,” Black added.li was extremely tough on both sides.
