Indians to open roundball season at Grayville FridayIt will be an entirely “new look” for the Shawneetown Indians this Friday as Coach Gary Patton’s cagers inaugurate their 1974-75 basketball season against Grayville’s Bisons.Indian fans will truly need a program to “identify” the players as the Pattonmen’s “new look” will consist of an all-new lineup, which is being necessitated by the fact that not one starter from last year’s 17-9 squad remains on the scene.Lost via graduation last year were 6-3 Bruce Bard, whoauthored over 1,800 points in his four-year career and is perhaps the greatest player to ever wear the “orange and black,” along with 6-1 Mike Flahardy and 6-1 David Wood, both two-year veterans. As for the other two starters from last year’s team, Troy Hall, a 6-0 Jr. decided to pass up basketball this winter and 6-4 Mike Duff, who was being counted on to carry much of the load this season following a brilliant freshman year, has transferred to Eldorado.Faced with a tough 18-gamevarsity schedule, Coach Patton has turned to last year’ssomewhat small (heightwise) junior varsity squad, which played at a sub-.500 pace, for help. Working with a 12-man squad consisting of two seniors, five juniors and five sophomores, he has tried several combinations, but to date reports he hasn’t settled on a starting five.Leading candidates for starting roles in Friday night’s season opener are 5-8 Sr. Martin Head, 5-7 Sr. Bill Wood, 6-1 Jr. Keith Riley, 5-8 Jr. Gary Vickery, 5-9 Jr. Tony Kivett, 6-0 Jr. Terry Wiles, 5-8 Jr. Danny Frailey and 5-9 So. Ricky Bard. Rounding out the varsity squad will be 6-2 So. Fred Boyer, 5-9 So. Darrell Bosse, 5-6 So. Leon Milligan and 5-3 So.
