Up For Debate AgainfStudents ProtestOver a thousand AustinHigh school students protested the coin toss method of deciding ties yesterday and demanded that Austin he given an opportunity to play off last Saturday’s tie with I^ane Tech. The outbreak began shortly after school started and continued most of the school day. Seven youths were picked up by police.NAILS“I’d just as soon lose a game by 50 points than lose it by tossing a coin, was one of the comments issued by Coach Bill Heil-and following his team's coinflipping loss last Saturday afternoon at Hanson Park.If the Tiger mentor was more than just a little upset following Saturday’s disappointment, he had a good reason to be. Five times since 1944 his Tigers havebeen eliminated from the public league race in this manner. In one instance, in 1916, he drew a short straw when the West section race wound up in a fiveway tie. This condition came about when the Tigers had to forfeit two games.Whether the public league will ever change its system of resolving playoff ties may he determined this Friday when the coaches and principals football committee meets. Coach lleiland, a member of the committee, favors the old system of having one sectional qualifier and arranging the schedule so that an ojmmi date exists late in the season. This would enable deadlocked teams to dash again. If necessary to determine a true public league champion, he would favor doing away with the allcity charity game. Also to be considered at Friday’s meeting is the apparently ineffective method of making up schedules. In 1950 Harrison took first place in the West section but did not have to face either Crane or Austin, two of the strongest teams in the circuit.A check back through the records shows that the Tigers have been unbeaten in league and playoff play for the past two years without getting a real crack at the city crown. In both instances coin-flipping ruled out Tiger playoff chances.Lane’s chances in the playoffs were lowered considerably with the revelation that their injured star halfback, Jack Sopkin, sustained a fractured bone above the left ankle in Saturday’s game and has been sidelined for the rest of the season.
