AN ICE YACHT CLUE.The cold snap of Saturday was a fresh reminder that the summer months have gone with all their gaiety and that the cold wintry days will soon be upon us. Our summers are full of pleasure for those who have the time to enjoy them. But to most of the permanent residents there is so much business to be attended to that but little time can be found to indulge in sport of any sort. The winter however affords a breathing spell, and while there is work enough for all who care to work, yet it is of such a character that time can found in which to gratify ones desire. We all need some recreation and “all work and no play” is applicable to man as well as boys. But if we have the time, we have not so much choice. Winter recreation for the most part is confined within doors. There is not much out door sport to be indulged in. There is one kind however, that is most appropriate, and that is ice boating. I n other portions of the country ice boating is considered quite the thing in the way of out floor sport. For years the Hudsofi river Has been noted for the races that have been sailed on its froaen surface. The lakes ot the northwest are also great gathering places for those who enjoy the sport. Why could not ice boating be made a winter feature in Bar Harbor ? Our beautiful Eagle lake furnishes an admirable place in which to carry it out. For sever, al seasons a few have indulged in the sport in a lonely sort of way. It was not until last season that there was any united action taken to bring it before the public. It will be remembered that well along in the season a few gentlemen got together and made arrangements for two or three races. The latter part of January the first one came off in which there were seven entries. A cup was offered for the winner, under certain restrictions. All this was well enough as far as it went. But it did not go far enough. Why not form a club and invite outsiders? Would not some of our summer visitors become interested? In fact was it not intimated that some of them intend to come here this winter as it is? If a club was formed would not more come ? Bar Harbor is a pretty good place in winter. Our summer friends are not hothouse plants. Many of them enjoy the e xhilera-tion of a drive even on the coldest day of winter.A dispatch from Newburgh N. Y., last week said that the famous ice yacht Snowdrift, which was owned and sailed by Willett Kidd, commodore of the Orange I.ake Ice Yacht club had been shipped to Maine and would be sailed on a lake near Augusta. The Rudder for November has an illustrated article on ice yachts and gives diagrams and.instractions for building the same. Once get a club started and induce some of the nonresidents to become interested and the time may not be far distant when some crack boats will be sent here. With a little effort Bar Harbor might become noted as winter resort as well as a summer resort. At any rate the thing is worth trying. It anything is to be accomplished for this winter, work must begin now. The horse show was gotten up in a hurry and was made a success because of the hard work of a few gentlemen and even then it was the personality of the men thatmade it a success. It might not work another year. The same men might not have charge of affairs. There are many things to be done to make an ice boat regatta a success and the time is all too short. The Kkcokd will, as usual, do what it can to help. It will keep its readers informed as to the condition of the ice, for it must be known that the paper goes to 4 the winter home of nearly ail the summer \
