Parkview's Basketball Rebuilding Starts With New Team, New CoachORFORDVILLE—There is little size or experience returning from last year’s team, so Ken Sisson appears to have his hands full as he begins his first year as basketball coach at Orfordville Parkview High School.Sisson, with 13 years of high school coaching behind him, has only two lettermen and no starters returning from last year’s team, which finished fourth in the Central Suburban Conference with a 7-7 league record. The Vikings were 10-9 overall.Sisson, who coached one year at Elmwood before moving on to six seasons at Richland Center and six more at Hazel Green, hopes the Vikings will be able to match last year’s record.“We’re going to be in a rebuilding process,” he said. “We will be small, fairly quick, and hopefully aggressive.“We have a lot of green ballplayers. You want to win every game, but I would hope that we can finish around the middle.”The Vikings’ hopes rest mainly on the shoulders of the two lettermen, seniors Connie Peterson and Harlan Leusink.Leusink, at 6-1, will start at one forward and the 5-9 Peterson will play guard and run the Vikings’ offense. At least two of the other starting positions will go to juniors, and the third might also. The center will be 6-1 junior Steve Warn, and the other forward will be 5-11 junior Ron Harnack. The other guard sport will be manned by Harnack’s twin brother Randy, also 5-11; or 5-11 senior Mickey Mattison. With such a young team, Sisson is counting on Peterson to take charge“Peterson is the man that has to make things run,” he said. “He’s our quickest player and will probably be the most prolific scorer. He’s a good ball handler and a good all-around player.”Sisson is also expecting a good performance from Leusink.“He’s pretty rugged,” said Nisson. “He as to go to the boards for us and he is capable of scoring. But he needs confidence and playing time.”For the rest of the starting lineup, the season may be a hard learningLeusinkPetersonRandy Harnack and Mattison, the challengers for the other guard spot, also have areas of the game they must work on.“He’s a good shooter,” Sisson said of Randy Harnack. “But he needs to work on defense a lotOthers whom Sisson is counting on to help the Vikings are 6-0 senior Jeff Viken, who can play forward or guard; 6-0 senior forward Dave Sorenson; 5-8 junior guard Marty Reichard; and 6-2 senior center Brian Johnson.“This is definitely a rebuilding year,” Sisson said. “I think we have to getexperience and develop some ruggedness on the boards and work well on defnese.“I think this team will score when we get them working together. Our weakneses are youth and size, and inexperience in our big men.”The Vikings open their season Saturday with a nonconference game Bt home against South Wayne Blackhawk They open conference play Tuesday at home against Beloit Turner The complete Parkview schedule:The Kansas City Royals Wednesday traded pitcher Nelson Briles to the Texas Rangers for second baseman Dave NelsonDefending champion Jimmy Connors routed Karl Meiler of West Germany 6-2, 6-1 Wednesday, to reach the quarterfinals of the Dewars Cup Tennis Tournament in Edinburgh, Scotland.experience. Sisson is expecting Warn and Ron Harnack to develop fast.“Warn is going to be pretty fair, he said. “He needs a lot of work and is still quite immature. He has a big body.“He’s 6-2 and still growing. I think he’ll progress and be a better player as the year goes on.“And Harnack is a good offensive ball player, but he needs work on defense,” he continued. “For his size, he does a good job on the boards.”xNov.
