The Bobcats had four first downs to one in the opening stanza.Cambridge started its first scoring bid of the night when Abood recovered a Reithmiller fumble at the Purple Rider 37 and three plays later, Lilienthal rippled the air for 25 yards to Hollins and the tally. Kris Warne produced the first of three kicks and a 7-0 lead with 5:24 to go in the half. The Bobcats mounted one more drive, that late in the period and reached the Martins Ferry 30 before a pass by Lilienthal was picked off by Rider Wilbur Winland. Warne booted the ball, giving him 19 points, the fourth best scoring mark for the club without having scored a touchdown.Martins Ferry cut a Cambridge bid short at the Bobcat 36 when Hollins fumbled the ball and Twardoski recovered the ball. However, the Riders were forced to punt, the ball dead at the 12 yard line.Cambridge moved the ball to the 49 yard line where a fourth down pass by Lilienthal was short and the Riders took over.Mark Hughes chugged 24 yards on a sweep and then Reithmiller hit end Dave Neavin for 10 yards to the Cambridge 14. Hughes carried twice, once for 11 and then in to score with 1:19 to play. The attempt to run for bonus points failed.Cambridge’s second unit got the ball at 1:15 and McCartney went to the air, hitting Tim McKim with a six yard strike, but a third down carry by John Vance failed to produce the needed yardage and McCartney lost the ball on downs when he threw an incompleted fourth down pass.Reithmiller went to the air and found Neavin for 22 yards to the Cambridge 20, then threw one pass into the end zone which was incomplete. He tried again, this one being snarred by Cambridge’s Steve Eyen, but a 15-yard clipping call which occurred before the interception gave Martins Ferry the ball at the 11 and a first down with 15 seconds to play.Reithmiller passed to Twardoski to the two yard line and Hughes scored from the two with two seconds to play.
