After having two potential touchdown marches nipped in the bud by holding penalties, Coach Hurry Shipkey’s men settled down to point getting in real earnest.COLE COES STRONGCole wheeled back 12 yards with a California punt to midfield to set ; ^up a goal ward drive which rolled those 40 yards in five plays. On first down little A1 pitched sharply to towering Ed Stamm on the Cal 40. Stamm moved 10 yards and then lateraled to his running mate, Bill Svmcs who got to the Cub 19.Cole swept his own right end for __ 5 yards, and then Chuck Taylor fti sneaked through left guard for 8 to J. the Cal 7 for another first down.Cole tried tackle for no gain and then rifled another of his shortVrret iVideadly passes to Symes. who fell ^ into scoring territory. On the at-tempted conversion the snap from • ,j center was fumbled by Cole and the f ball was downed by the Bear Cubs.1 PENETRATE TO 28 Once the Cubs penetrated to the , Card 28, but there Shipkey’s five-man line, ably backed by Taylor.Bill Mannon, and Red Laverty, I I reared lip to halt the invaders. Mannon especially was all over the field intercepting two passes and making stop after stop. But those persistent Be ars came right hack with a 25-vard pass from Pickett to Jim Ferguson which carried way down to the Card 12. j U,1£I! was Cole who halted this invasion with an interception on the 5-yard line which he returned to the 12. Then A1 punted out of dan-I rj o *gcr and the half ended soon after-wards. 1 CarFERGUSON RECOVERS j be!jHowever, those Bears couldn't be denied in the second half. Ferguson 11 1recovered an onside kick-oft on the unvPapooses to put the Cards in a hole. Cole faded to pass again, j t|1(? saw no receiver and scooted away yn from a swarm of onrushing Cal i 49 liiiomm down the sidelines, reversed 1 his field with his pursuers still right on his heels, and spun on down to 1the Cal 5.It took big Milt Vucinich just two plays to crunch those 5 yards to the 1winning touchdown and Bill Hanlon, sub quarterback, converted.The whole Card line was a power ' on defense. Ed McCain and Dick Palmer knifed through several times 1 to spill the Cal backs before they j even got started. And Bruno Ban-ducci, Symes and Stamm stopped most of those vaunted Cal end runs and ofi’-tackle slants. *Red Robinson got off towering punts just when they were needed as Well as rolling up yardage on reverses to the weak side.Shipkey admitted that he was j worried for a while but was well pleased with how the Papooses came 1 through their crucial battle.
