They amassed 18 first downs on 472 yards, .but fumbles, interceptions and penalties kept the score out of the embarrassing range. ■Though no match for the Pirates, San Mateo lost no' pres tige, The Bulldog offense, working well overhead and on the ground, clicked smoothly for the first' time, this season. The defense'looked well drilled.Passes Misfired . •San Mateo’s biggest setback was its pass receiving. Crucial aerials on the target by quarterback Manny Escalara often went through the fingers of would-be 'receivers. But Escalara had his own troubles, too, misfiring on. two occasions, both interceptions converted into TD drives by the Pirates.One of them set the .winning TD march ip .motion, the Pirates ' taking over the ball on their own 12 to kill a last-quarter San Mateo drive with the score knotted at 14-14.Modesto' marched 72 yards in four plays and with three minutes and 45 seconds on the clock, quarterback Phil Peterson hit end Roland Baker'with a 41-yard pass for the winning score. Peterson missed his first P.A.T.. attempt of the day, but it didn’t_ matter much with the dock running out.Bad Stent •It looked bad for the Bulldogs in the first quarter as the Bucs' converted an intercepted' Esca-lera pass into a touchdown.Center Ed Vegely pulled down the aerial on the San Mateo 31. Jim Johnson, who “killed” the Bulldogs with those short biit crucial gainers all day, bulldozed most of the yardage to the one-yard line where Carl Edling skirted end for the score. Peterson added'the point.The score only served to stir up the Bulldogs, however. They held until late in the second period and then exploded with a 42-yard pass play for a touchdown.Escalara uncorked a beauty to end Gordy Lewis, who pulled it in on the five and stepped into the end zone.
