Flyers avenge final in season openerBY JEFF WITWICKIRevenge was sweet for the Stonewall Myers last Friday as they opened the 1992-93 South Interlakc HockeyLeague season with a 3-2 victory over the WarrenMercury s.It was those same Mercs who squeaked past Stonewall m the league finals last season to take the championship, which made the early win all the better for Stonewall.'Hie Flyers took ;ui early1-0 lead and never looked hack in the game, as Bruce Johnson. Joe Pieiras and Brad Bulbuck all bulged the twine for Stonewall.Ken Pawluk and Derek Erb responded for Warren in a tight checking contest.I.titular Squeaks Pas! Jets 5-3'Hie Lundar Falcons spotted the Stonewall Jets an early 2-0 lead before they stormed back to take the South Interlakc Hockey League season opener 5-3.Darrell Armstrong scored twice in the first period to give Stonewall quick two-goal lead.I lowever, Tim Christenson and Shane Erickson evened the score for Lundar before the end of the second period.Erickson scored again in the third to give the Falcons their first lead of the game, before Stonewall’s Jarrctt Thicsscn deadlocked the game at 3-3.Adam Christenson scored the winner lor Lundar soon after, and Grant Peterson put the game away with an empty-netter.Lundar 6, Ashcrn 6Roric Magnusson’s second goal of the game late in the third period gave the Falcons a 6-6 tic in Ashem last Sunday.•Hie Ashcrn Hornets stung First in the opening period, thanks to a Jeff Dyck goal.The Hornets lead didn't stand for long, however, as Garland Magnusson, Roric Magnusson and Marc Des-jarlais gave Lundar a 3-1 lead after the first period.Dyck scored his second of the game for Ashem and Shane Erickson popped one for Lundar as the Falcons led 4-2 aftci two.The Hornets scored three straight in the third for a 5-4 advantage, with Warren Todcran, John Combs and Jeff Dyck doing the honors.Lundar’s Mike Johnson and Ashem’s Rod Sveistrup traded goals soon after, before Roric Magnusson tied the score.Tigers Maul Fisher Branch 6-1The Ten Ion Tigers opened their season last Friday with a 6-1 win over the Fisher Branch Blades.Marc Giasson scored first in the game to give Fisher Branch a First period lead before Teuton's Greg Head tied the score in the second.The real fun took place in the third period, after Tiger goalie Derik Chanson and Blade puck-stoppcr Rcjcan Meillcur were kicked out of the giune for some rough stuff.After that, Toulon put the game away with goals by Jeff Brockcr. Jorge Auchenbach, Al Chohotar, Drew Woy-towich, and Kevin Choboiar. Sean Carman had two assists for the Tigers as well.Fivers Double Tigers 10-5Rob Jo wet t and Jeff 1s-bister had two goals and two assists each to lead the Stonewall Flyers over teuton 10-5.Other goals for Stonewallcame courtesy of Glen Allard. Brad Bulbuck. Dave Lindlcy, Chns Marshall,Brent Isbistcr, and JoePictras.Dean Goodbrandson had a big game for the Tigers with a three goal performance.Doug Barker and RodLedochowski also scored for Teuton. Period scores were2-1 for Stonewall after the first. 5-1 after the second and 10-5.Fisher Branch 6. Jets 6Derik Thiessen's short handed goal with 2:51 minutes left in the third period lifted the Stonewall Jets into a 6-6 tie with Fisher Branch last Sunday.The Jets carried a 5-3 lead into the final period, but watched it fade away as the Blades scored three straight goals.Al Mitchell scored twice for Stonewall, while Curt Jensen, Rick Woodward and Craig Stewart also lit the lamp for the Jets.Stu Evans scored twice for Fisher Branch, with singles ■going to Darcy Davidow, [_Joel Dandeneau, DarrylSkibinski and Darcy Gauthier.Seven teaBY JEFF WITWICKIWhen the Warren Mercu-rys last saw action in the South Interlakc Hockey League, they were busy celebrating Derek Erb’s championship-winning goal against the Stonewall Flyers.That goal, which ended the league's 1991-92 season with one second left in the Finals, gave the Mercs a lot to live up to this season.
