Fox Valley cagers promisingXANTRIL — Two new coaches will be on hand in 1970-71 as Fox Valley tries to shake the role of Empire Conference bridesmaid. Both boys and girls teams were runner-up inthe loop a year ago.Loyd Johnson and Arnold Baier will have five starters back on a girls team that finished 10-9 last year and was also second in the loop tourney. Four returnees earned allconference honors, giving hope of one of Fox Valley’s finest teams in recent years.The entire forward court of senior Sheryl Grim, junior Cheryl Martin and soph Joyce Grim returns along with junior letter-winner Joyce Kirkhart and freshmen Dana Davis andKim Martin.The guard court has five veterans, seniors Linda Hargrove and Debra Muntz, juniors Sherrie Smith and Myra Black and soph Janell Randolph along with freshmen Bonnie Cook, Betty Shobe, Kathy Smith and JamieWheaton.Sheryl Grim and SherrieSmith were all-conference a year ago with Joyce Grim, Martin and graduated Kathy McNabb on the second team.Sweede Larson, an Upper Iowa graduate in his fourthyear of coaching, has two allconference performers around which to build his first team.The returnees are Allen Holsapple, 6-1 forward-center,and LCliff Martin, 6-1 forwardguard.k Both are seniors and two-time all-loop picks.They are the only returning starters although eight other lettermen are back. Leading candidates for starting berths include guards Jeff Fuller and Mark Martin, forwards Don Davis, Doug Boyd and Dave Miller and 6-2 center Perry Phillips. All are seniors but Mark Martin and Miller, both juniors.
