Tim Maruca swung end for another score, and senior flanker George Gabriel, playing his last game ir. Falcon livery, was on the scoring end ofinto penalty trouble for motion, and wound up punting from its own 42. Each side had two exchanges of downs after that before CAHS got rolling again.CAHS had been stopped at the Scot 48, and Kerens kicked out of bounds on the 7. But the Scotties were unable to move the sticks, and John Gower kicked to his own 47, from where the Falcons moved again.A Ferens to Mike Hardy passa 37-yard pass-run with quar- a first down at the 29.terbaek Dan Ferens. Gabriel had three catches for 75 yards.Connellsville’s scoring drives included one of 63 yards with the opening kiekoff, 47, 32 (after a fumble recovery), and 65 yards.Southmoreland moved across the 50-yard line only three times, with its deepest penetration being to the Falcon 19 in the closing minute of the first half. That push was halted when Ferens intercepted a pass near the five and ran it back 16 yards. The other two pushes were stopped by fumbles, both recovered by Connellsville.Jim Jaequillard was South-moreland’s top ground gainer, having 86 yards in 10 carries, 47 of them on two wide end sweeps off the double reverse. It was his 30-yard run that moved Southmoreland to its deepest penetration of the game in the second quarter. Kevin Keto carried 22 times for 78 yards.Both coaches kept shuttling players in and out, Coach Sankovich getting all his seniors into their last game, plus eight sophomores, and in the end having virtually an underclass lineup on the field. The players didn’t mind the ‘shuttle run’ one bit, for the heater back of the Falcon bench was a welcome sight as they came off the field. That and the gloves provided for the linemen. Murphy got that, and everything else ahead of him when he hit quickly over his own left tackle out of the ‘Power I’ and angled left, sidestepping one defender, and racing in to score at 4:55. Clinton Smith’s PAT kick try was blocked, but now the Falcons had a 12-0 lead.On the third play after the kiekoff, Sherwood tried to handoff, but was rushed and hit by Hardy, and fumbled. Ferens recovered for Connellsville at the Scotty 32.On the first play, Dave Biondo led the charge that dropped Ferens back 11 yards to the 43. A second down Ferens to Maruca pass got six, leaving third and 15 to go at the 37. That was covered in one play, as Gabriel got loose on the right side, with nobody near him, and hauled in Ferens’ pass at about the 15, going in to score at 2:02. A Pastors to Hardy pass tacked on the PAT, and CAHS had a 20-0 half time lead.The Scotties came right back with their best push of the night, and looked like they might get on the board before time ran out. Jaequillard ran the kiekoff back to the 34. He and Keto got five each for a new set of downs at the 44. A pass was incomplete, Keto got five on the draw, and on third down (and 5 from the 49) Jaequillard came off the double reverse with a wide swing to the left and raced to the CAHS 21 before Gabriel ran him out of bounds. Jaequillard got two, to the 19, and after a second down pass was incomplete, Ferens picked off a third down pass and ran it back to the 20, ending the only real threat the Scotties would pose the rest of the way.Each side ran one series of downs to open the second hail, then CAHS was in business again. Gower kicked out of bounds at the home 35, and the drive needed only five plays.A Ferens to Murphy pass got 13 at the start, and a first down at the 48. Then Murphy hit quickly ahead again out of the T and stepped left, racing 39 yards to the Southmoreland 13, before Remaley hauled him down from behind.From the 13, Murphy lost a yard, Ferens got 8 over the right side, and on third down, Maruca angled left for the final six, scoring at 3:23. Smith’s kick was wide to the right, and CAHS led 26-0, with scoring completed for the night.CAHS got back to the Scotty 5 after that, fumbled and recovered with the loss of two yards, and had a fourth down pass fall incomplete.
