’Devils Rip Battle, 36-0By ALAN GODSfcY Times-News Correspondent Gate City’s Blue Devils closed out their 1973 season Friday night with an impressive 3(1*0 victory over the visiting John Battle Trojans.The Big Blue finished its regular season with a fine 9-1 record, and with a miracle in Grundy next Friday, you ran still gain the Virginia Class A A playoffs.The backfield duo of Mickey Rogers and Tim Bkmken-becler combined for three touchdowns in the game and 219 yards rushing to lead Gate City offensively. Rogers also caught two passes for 55 yards, including a 41-yard or for a touchdown.Calc City scored twice in the First quarter, driving 73 yards in 12 plays for its first score with Beville going the final two yards behind big Doug Humphries, and getting Ihe other on an 8-yard run by Blankenbeeler that completed a 65-yard drive. Ricky Shoemaker, Skipper Jones and Rick Begley cleared the way for Blanker heeler s TD run with their blocking.Gate City boosted its lead to 22-0 at half lime when Rogers took a 41-yard scoring pass from Beville late in the half. Rogers caught the ball on the 25 and never broke si ride on his way to the end zone.Gate City marched 67 yards in 10 plays with the second half kickoff to get another score, with BlanckenbeekT going over left tackle behind blocks by Jeff Hamilton and Ricky Shoemaker to up ibe lead to 2lt;S-fl.Then Mark Blanton 5-10, 200-pound senior, added the final touchdown with lilllo more than three minutesremaining in the game, blocking a punt, picking it up andsprinting 25 yards for the Blue Devils' final score.Rogers finished with 144 yards rushing and Blanken-heeler 75.
