BY DON CARTERYORK TWP.—Mike Lewis got hiswish last night.Earlier this week the Buckeye mentor remarked that he wanted to play a Chippewa Conference team and win, which his team did quite easily last night when the Bucks handed Cloverleaf its sixth loss on what some sports predictorswould term an “upset. But on the snow-covered field, it didn’t look like an underdog team, challenging the Colts as Bucks pounded Cloverleaf 28-6 in the final game of the season. From the first snowy stanza the York Township crew took complete control when the Colts’ opening drive faltered with a fumble recovery by Buck Bob Casper on the visitors’ 40.Filling in for injured Steve Union, the Bucks’ Larry Brubaker proved that he also had commendable speed when he grabbed the cold leather on the third play for a 33-yard race down the sidelines before Mark Chestnutwood sent him out of bounds on the Colts’ one yard line. But the visitors defense was no match for a quarterback sneak as Mike Hawley gingerly stepped over his center for the opening Buckeye score.Brubaker capped the drive with a trot over the goal line, and Buckeye was up 8-0 with 9:20 left in the quarter. The remainder of the first quarter stayed unchanged until the second quarter when the Colts’ drive ran against stiff Buckeye resistence and ran out of downs on its 32.Tailback Tom Kruse opened the Bucks’ drive off with a 30 yard blast to midfield. Then in two carries, Brubaker snaked his way to the Colts’ 24 to set the stage for the second Buckeye score. On a second and four situation, 150-pound Hawley took a wide sweep to the sidelines, then quickly reversed inside to shake a surprise Cloverleaf tackle and plowed straight ahead for the endzone with the Colts’ l^arry loanee, Darryl Duff and Tony Balser hanging on for the TDride.way into the second quarter around the50.For the next six plays, Kruse and Brubaker exchanged the task of moving the pigskin further into the Colts’ stable.Afterwards, Hawley grabbed the ball on the 21 and moved the heated leather to the 10 with the aid of a personal foul penalty on Cloverleaf.A short screen followed and Casper brought in the final TD of the first half. The same play worked again as Hawley sailed another screen over the Cloverleaf line and John Medley added two more to the already lopsided score.“By the time we got the third score that was set up by the penalty, we knew we had the game and our defense let up a bit,’’ Lewis later recapped. But that “let-up’’ helped, at least for the Colts when in the second half drive Cloverleaf managed to get on the board after a tedious six minute drive.Receiving a Buckeye punt on their 11, the Colts slowly slugged their way toSnowBlue DevilsThe Brunswick-Revere game was postponed last night because the Revere field was buried under eight inches of the fluffy white snow whichfell yesterday.Officials from both schools received an okay from the Ohio High School Athletic Association toTuesdayp.m. at Revere. The conversion run tailed wnen tne Cloverleaf squad hit Brubaker on an outside sweep and the score remained 14-0.Collecting the following kickoff on the C-15, Jerry I^ance lifted the Coltbench’s spirit with a 38-yard scramble toBuckeye’s 42.But on his next play an aerial turned into the sole interception of the evening as Casper gave the Bucks control mid-the 21 on a desperate fourth down effort that paid off when Randy Allen dove through the Bucks’ defense for the first down. Then scrambling from the 29Chestnutwood raced toward midfield only to fumble, but he recovered the elusive ball and Cloverleaf had another first on its 47.Chestnutwood again followed that effort with another slippery scramble that took the visitors into the Bucks’home turf.Allen spelled the light halfback for the next two plays and got 12 yards, which Chestnutwood later improved upon and took the ball to the 27.Duff, who hauled the ball 97 yards inIS parries for the game. SDarked hisevening’s performance by outstepping the Bucks’ defense and forged his way down the sidelines for the only Cloverleaf touchdown. With a short charge up the middle, Duff put the Colts in a better frame of mind, with an additional two points and the Buckeye shutout was ended, 22-6.The remainder of the scoring was witnessed in the early minutes of the fourth quarter when the Bucks recovered another Cloverleaf fumble on the Colts’ 23.Brubaker padded his rushing yardage with a short run to the 18 and Hawley added to his rushing tally with a 16 yard sweep down the snowy sidelines. But the scoring honors went to Kruse as the senior tailback made the final touchdown of his high school career with a two-yard dive.Another senior’s attempt to bring in added points failed on the conversion when the Colt defense dropped Kerry Cullin short of the goal line and the scoring ended 28-8 with 9:53 left in the game. The leading Buckeye rushers for the evening were Hawley, Brubaker andKruse.Hawley, who averaged a little over 10 yards per carry, lugged the wet, cold ball 11 times for 118 yards while teammate Brubaker admirably filled in for injured Steve Union with 114 yards in 22 carries.Kruse gained 89 yards in 11 carries to aid the Buckeye ground attack of 327 yards for 47 attempts.Although the Colts mustered 43carries for 240 yards on the ground, two of its backs slammed out close to 100 yards last night.Duff lead Cloverleaf with 97 yards, but Allen closely rivaled his teammate with 93 yards in 15 charges.Chestnutwood nearly matched Duff’s average of 7.5 yards per carry when the plucky back’s 10 runs for 73 yards gave him a 7.3 yard average.Buckeye finished 7-2-1 and the Colts 3-7. _STATISTICSBCFirst DownsIS11Rushes-Yardage47-32743-240Rushing Average7S.6Passes-Completions219-2Passing Yardage925Interceptions10Punts-Average2-321-25Penalties Yardage3-257-70Fumbles-Lost2-13-2SCORINGBUCKEYE8 140 6-28CLOVERLEAF0 08 0-8B—Hawley, 1 run, Brubaker run.B—Hawley, 24 run, run failed.B—Casper, 10 pass from Hawley, Medley pass from Hawley.C—Duff, 27 run, Duff run.B—Kruse, 2 run, run failed.
