By Scott BrownREGISTER-HERALD SPORTS WRITERFAIRLEA — Greenbrier West and tailback RickCline continue to roll through the 1991 season.After strolling through the regular season unbeaten and virtually untested in 10 games, the Cavaliers ran into some serious speed bumps before coming to life with 22 second half points in a 22-0 triumph over Independence. The game was one of four Class AA opening round playoff games played Friday night. A crowd of approximately 2,100 fans braved the 25-degree temperatures at Greenbrier East’s Spartan Stadium to watch West gain only its secondplayoff victory in nine tries.“This is what it’s all about,” said an obviously relieved Cavalier coach Howard Hylton. You have to give Independence a lot of credit. They came in hereready to play. MWpp *The Patriots worked their game plan to near perfection in the first half. They were able to control the ball nearly two-thirds of the opening half with a short-yardage, time consuming passing game.Senior quarterback Timmy Justice came out slinging from both barrels as he completed 10 of his first 17 passes for 108 yards and continually kept the Patriots on the march towards the goal line.Crossing it, however, was were they ran into problems.“We would break down when we would get inside the 10,” explained coach David “Scotty Cuthbert. “We’d have a penalty or get sacked or do something to where we couldn’t execute down there.Independence got into Cavalier territory in three of its four first half possessions, but only once had an opportunity to dent the scoreboard. That fell through when Justice, who also serves as the place-kicker, came up just shy on a 30-yard field goal try.Hylton credited some minor changes in the defensive front with keeping the Patriots in check in thesecond half.“We felt we made some proper adjustments at half-time to contain their quarterback (Justice) and hold him in the pocket.”The best adjustment the Greenbrier West staff made, however, was seeing to it that the 5-10,188-pound Cline got plenty of work to dissect the Patriot defense.And dissect he did.The transplanted back from cross-county rival Greenbrier East ran the ball 31 times for 180 yards. He also scored all three of the Cavalier touchdowns on runs of 10, three and one yard.“We give the ball to our tailback. That’s what he’s back there for,” Hylton smiled. “He gets the jobdone.” Ij.V ^Cline, yet to be held under 100 yards in a game thisseason, credited his offensive line for its blocking, though much of his yardage was gained on second and third efforts.“Our line blocked well and they’re only going to getbetter, he said.“This season has been more than I ever hoped for.”His first touchdown was set up when he recovered a punt that was muffed by Independence at the 10-yard line. He took it in the next play and also added the conversion rush for the 8-0 lead midway in the third period.Cline’s second touchdown, a three-yarder, was set up by a pair of long gains by senior fallback Daniel Agee, one on a 21-yard run and another on a 18-yard pass reception from Chris Vaughan.
