St. Nicholas Loses 18-13 To St. AgnesSt. Nicholas Red Wings closed their football competition in the CYO South Suburban League, Green with a gift to St. Agnes of Chicago Heights.The Red Wings led all the way with a close score, but failed to capitalize on key moments. On one ocassion in the first half, a 64-yard punt return by Dan King, which ended at the 11-yard line of St. Agnes.In the third quarter, the Red Wings had the ball on the one-yard line with four plays to gofor a touchdown, the ball was intercepted on first play for atouchback.The game started with the St. Agnes kick-off. Ed Sealy received the ball at the 28-yard line and ran for a 72-yard touchdown return, Garry Schouten and Pat Kilheeney forming the key blocks. Sealy scored the conversion point. Red Wings led 7 - 0.St. Agnes received the ball at their 3()-yard line.On second play from scrimmage St. Agnes fumbled, with Pat Kilheeney recovering it for the Red W'ings.Sealy rushed quickly for 10 yards. St. Agnes defense moved in tight. Their offense moved the ball well, 80 yards on 8 plays and a touchdown. St. Agnes conversion point was blocked.The score became 7 - 6 Red Wings.Dan King of the Red Wings returned the St. Agnes kickoff for a 64-yard dash. The offense failed to increase their lead with this opportunity. Then St.Agnes picked-up 19 yards on 3 plays, but Pete Sorci drove them back for a loss of 7 yards.Dan Horvath and Pat Kilheeney made some fine tackles.The second quarter was highlighted with a beautiful 27-yard pass reception by Ray Miller, on a bootleg pass from Ed Sealy. Good defensiveprotection by Rich Salazar, Don Bonet and Garry Schouten contained St. Agnes at the one foot line, to end the first half.The second half started witha St. Agnes fumble, recoveredby Bill Griffin of the Red Wings at their 29-yard line. Ed Sealy moved it to the one-yard line. On the next play from scrimmage St. Agnes intercepted a short pass in the end zone for an automatictouchback.Two plays later Ed Sealy recaptured a St. Agnes fumble at the 34-yard line of St. Agnes. Pat Kilheeney caught an 18-yard pass reception, Dan King gained another 7 yards and Ed Sealy carried the ball in from the 9-yard line for his 9th TD of the season.The try for the two-point conversion kick was blocked, 13 - 6 Red Wings. St. Agnes came from behind and moved their offensive line rapidly through the Red Wing defense, with Brett Behrens and John Bednarczyk sparking on the plays with some fine tackles. Nevertheless St. Agnespenetrated the defense and scored from the 5-yard line. The lead was narrowed to a 13- 12. St. Nick was forced to dispose of the ball on fourth play, Ray Miller boomed a 45-yard punt.Going into the fourth quarter St. Agnes fullback ran a 79-yard touchdown from scrimmage, to make the score 18 - 13. The clock became a factor. With 59 seconds to go, the Red Wings tried some long bombs, but failed with St. Agnes defense deflecting and intercepting to end a mostexciting game.MendelFroshPostMendel’s freshmen football team, coached by Jim Rior-dan and Dave Maher, had a remarkable record this season— 8-0 with averaging 28 points a game against four for its opponents.The young Monarchs were the only freshman football eleven to go unbeaten in the Catholic League’s north and south sections. Leading scorer was a big fullback. Bill Bailey. He garnered 60 points on 10 touchdowns.Phil Cullen had 28 points. Mike Heenan of Queen of Apostles parish in Riverdale was outstanding as an offensive center. “He was great as a blocker, and he’s a top notch student, too,” commented Riordan.(continued below)
