Called Off By Sheriff Under Instruction From Governor—Follow Bingham's Opinion.A boxing contest billed for tonight at Laporte has been called off.Eddie Stern, promoter of the carnival, made the announcement on Change today and said that his action was due to a telegram received by Sheriff Smutzer from Governor Hanly. The governor wired to the he riff telling the latter that the box-ng contest planned would be in vio-.ation of the law, and that it was the sheriff’s duty to prevent it. The sheriff told Stern of the order he bad received, and Stern called the ontest off immediately.The opposition to the boxing carnival arose in the ranks of the pas-:or's club. This club appointed a committee composed of the Revs. Sorter, Garrard and Harmon to take the affair in hand. The committee obtained all information possible in regard to the contest and forwarded it to' the governor.Attorney General’s Opinion.The action of the governor in or-ierin’g the boxing contests off is in line with the opinion given by the ittorney general recently, in which be held that all contests in which there are prizes or rewards are to be railed prize fights, even though the contestants may receive a stipulated sum or a proportion of the door re-:epit.s. The opinion of the attorney general was submitted at the request of the governor.A ten-round go between Jack O’Niel of Philadelphia . and Otto Sieloff of Chicagp would have been the principal feature of the carnival which was to haye been given in Lay’s hall. It was ,the opinion of Manager Stern that under the contracts in the contest it could • not have been classed as a prize fight, but he did not wish to take any chances.
