Maplewood’s Steve Cox proceeded to turn the lights out on the Golden Eagles.Cox rushed for 166 yards on 31 carries leading a powerful Tiger rushing attack that propelled them to a 24-6 win in the semifinals of the District 10 Class A playoffs.We run the ball, that's what we planned to do and that’s what we did, said Maplewood coach Jeff Hager. Then the game belonged to the Cox, a 6-0, 220 pound senior.On Maplewood's opening drive, a 10-play, 49-yard march capped with a four-yard run, Cox carried the ball seven times for 34 yards, including thescoring run.Kennedy Christian answered, however, knotting the score at 6-6 with 3:09 to play in the first half. After a poor Maplewood punt (9 yards), the Golden Eagles took over on the Tiger 29-yard line.Bill Fuchs scampered 19 yards on a quarterback sneak. Setting up Darius Johnson’s 25-yard touchdown run.Johnson was to be the featured back in Kennedy Christian's game plan, but the senior running back never got on track,gaining Just 45 yards on sixcarries.Maplewood took a 12-6 lead into the locker room, after Cox scored his second touchdown of the night. He capped the eight-play, 59-yard drive, when he punched the ball in from two yards out with 30 seconds remaining in the half.Kennedy Christian returned the kickoff to its own 37 yard line, and on a thlrd-and-25 play, almost surpised the Tigers. With one second showing on the dock, Fuchs tossed up a Hail Mary-type pass that Andy Doboeh pulled in at midfield. Dobosh made his move and sprinted down the sideline, but was corralled 20 yards short of the endzone.The second half was all Maplewood.The Tigers took the kickoffand drove 63 yards on five plays, aided by the three offside calls on Kennedy Christian. Cox carried the ball on all five plays, for 48 yards.if there was any question left as to which team was dominating the line of scrimmage, Cox capped an eight-play, 32-yarddive with a three-yard touchdown run, his fourth score of the night, giving his Tigers a commanding 24-6 lead.’They certainty have some powerful backs, said KennedyChristian coach Don George, who was coaching in his first game since replacing Frank Kunclo. The Tigers now face defending District 10 champion Eisenhower, which advanced with an 18-16 win over Llnes-vllle. in the District 10 Class A final.
