Gehlen Jays fall to after leading at halftime*f-» •• •-rt •lt;Le Mars Gehlen’s Jays finished their1971 season with a loss from the Wildcats of Woodbury Central, 29-12 after leading athalftime, 12-6.Woodbury Central, undefeated throughout the year and champions of the Maple Valley conference, finished fifth in the state in class AA competition and second in northwest Iowa in their class.Kevin Kelly scored the first Gehlen touchdown early in the first quarter with the extra point conversion failing for the Jays to take an early lead, 6-0.Woodbury Central’s 5’7”, 145 senior halfback, Jerry Steffen scored on a three yard run for the Wildcat’s first TD to tie the score at 6-6.Senior halfback for the Jays, Jim Flaherty, marched in eight yards in the second quarter for the Birds to boost their halftime advantage by six points.In the third quarter, Woodbury Central’s fullback, Jim Countryman, blasted a final two yards through the middle for the Wildcats second TD of the night.Marty Sergeant booted the PAT for the Wildcat’s 19th point of the game for WC.Tim Neustrom, quarterback for the host Wildcats threw a 15 yard pass to Dennis Stubbs for their next TD.Neustrom took the ball across himself for the PAT.Neustrom wasn’t finished for the night, though as he passed to Kurt Nash for the final touchdown of the night and again took to the air for the PAT.Woodbury Central out passed the Jay Birds 157 yards to Gehlen’s 87 and out rushed them 92 yards to Gehlen’s 65.Jim Flaherty was the leading rusher for the Birds with only 35 yards.
