Tremendous recognitionUT to honor Lee HS coachQr JONATHAN COOPERSports EditorA former college standout and current Lee Ganders girls basketball coach will be inducted in University of Texas Women’s Hall of Honor this weekend.Retha Swindell has coached at Lee since *84, only five years after she became the first woman’s basketball All-American at Texas.She said be inducted into the Hall is an awesome honor.“They called me last year and told me I had been inducted, but then I didn’t hear anything about it until a few weeks ago” she said. “I didn’t want to tell anyone in case they had made a mistake.”It’s not a mistake when a player pulls down 1,759 rebounds and scores 1,795 points for a career. She is the only UT player ever to log more than 1,500 points and rebounds. She averaged a double-double, scoring 11.9 points per game and pulling down 11.7 rebounds per game.“I respected everyone I played against but wasn’t afraid of anyone,” Swindell said about her style of play.She played high school at Center before attending Texas. She mostly remembers her teammates.“We didn’t fly everywhere back then, so you got to know your teammates on the long bus rides,” she said.In her sophomore year, UT’s winningest coach Jody Conradt took over the program. Swindell said she was warned about a possible change when she committed.
