Catawba Edges Wofford 29-26SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP)— Quarterback John Scott charged over with the winning touchdown from the one - yard line with two minutes left Saturday to give Catawba a 29-26 football victory over Wofford.The play was set up by a 37-yard pass from halfback Marshall Murphy to Ed Koontz.Wofford's Terriors moved the ball from their own 29 to the Indians’ 9 in six plays after the ensuing kickoff, but there Catawba’s defense saved the game by taking possession on downs.The Terriors held Catawba to 100 yards rushing, but Scott completed 12 of 21 pass attempts for 189 yards, including two touchdown passes and two two-point conversion throws.End David Campbell of Catawba broke open the game in the second quarter by scoring on a 29-yard pass from Scott. But Wofford quarterback Warren Whittaker scored twice on one-yard plunges and the Ter-rior’s led 14-7 at halftime.The Indians took the second-half kickoff and marched to the Wofford 20 where Scott passed to end Steve Berry for a score and threw to Ed Koontz for the conversion, giving the Indians a 15-14 lead.Minutes later Scott fumbled a handoff and Wofford recovered deep in Catawba territory. Three plays later halfback Bill Ellis broke through. Wofford muffed the two-point conversion and led 20-15.David Campbell took a Wofford punt later in the third period and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed.Early in the last quarter Wofford grabbed a 26-21 lead when Whittaker scored his third touchdown of the day from the one, climaxing a 71-yard drive.The Terriors’ defense then held the lead until Scott broke through in the wanning minutes.
