Shirk andHead LettermenasOpens Cage Drills“It looks like a long haul, was the first comment by Austin Junior College basketball coach Hal Cuff as he watched his Blue Devils romp through a workout Wednesday at the Austin gym.From the looks of things the veteran Austin coach has h i s work cut out as he attempts to fashion another winning combination in the always rugged Southern Minnesota Junior College Conference title race.Cuff has six lettermen back from last year’s outstanding team that finished with a remarkable 19-2 record, the undisputed SMJCC title and represented the conference alongwith Mankato Bethany in the Region 13 tournament at Hibbing.But only 6-6 center Phil Block, former Lyle star, and 6-6 forward-center Don Shirk were regarded as regulars. Shirk, who participated in 22 games, finished with 298 points for a 13.5 scoring average. Block had 211 points for a 9.6 average and both were exceptionally fine rebounders and defensive players.Other lettermen on the 18-mansquad are guard Bill Goblirsch, who participated in 15 games last year; guard Gary Lunt and center-forward Larry Arndt.Missing are guards Maurice Joel, who was the team’s leading scorer with 313 points, andPiccolo May BecomeLegendWake ForestDave Underwood; forwards Bryan Johnson, Carroll Austinson, Bill Booher and Del Senjem and guards Ed Vilt, John LeVelle, and Stan Gerhart. Of this group Joel, Underwood, Johnson, Austinson and Booher were considered regulars.While Block and Shirk are considered two of^he best players in the conference, Cuff may have trouble finding capable replacements for the other departed stars.The picture isn’t all black, however, as Cuff has some promising newcomers, who are expected to give the Blue Devils plenty of scoring punch. Among the top prospects are Mike Burke, former Austin High School and Colorado State ace; Harry Musser, who was a member of the Austin state tournament team last year; Robert Denny of Kasson-Mantorville;Bill Jahr, a sharp guard from Pacelli and Gary Moeyken of Blooming Prairie.By MIKE RATHETAssociated Press Sports Writer ! That’s the last time the Deacons Scored.- They’ve ben shut out in six consecutive games, have had tl8 points rolled up by their opponents and extended the nation’s longest current losingsteak to 17 games. And things are bound to get worse beforethey get better.Duke knows it. The Blue Devils are next on the Wake Forest schedule. While the Deacons worked out Wednesday, trying to fashion an offense, Duke prepared for the game by working on scoring from close inand drilling on punt returns.That’s about all they figure to do Saturday. Last year, Duke won 50-0. Wake Forest hasn’t improved. Duke has.Elsewhere, the main focus was on the latest medical bulletins, with Syracuse and Southern California getting the worst news. The Orange have lost tackle Henry Huetter with a broken hand. Trojan center Larry Sagouspe will have to undergo surgerv for a bad knee.Others are Roger Otto of Elk-ton, Mike Ferguson of Glenville,Ed Hanson of Pacelli and Bruce Arthun and Gary Hovland of Austin.With Shirk and Block available, the Blue Devils have good height and good all-around speed.Cuff, who will be assisted by A1 Lehrke again, plans daily workouts in an effort to uncover a winning combination for the season’s opener, Nov. 23 against Waldorf JC at Forest City. Iowa.
