Missionary men defeat Gonzaga 3-2 in final soccer match of seasonWhitman College concluded its men’s soccer season with a 3-2 non-conference, non-district victory over Gonzaga University at the Whitman soccer field Thursday afternoon.The Missionaries finished with a 3-8 overall mark. They didn’t record a conference or district victory.Gonzaga took a 1-0 lead Thursday when Rusty Arlig booted in a penalty kick.At 45 minutes into the match, Whitman senior Ted George scored when he gathered a rebound from a hard shot off the cross bar by Whitman junior Chris Roberts.The half ended with the score tied 1-1.Two minutes into the second half Whitman took the lead when freshman Urban Dabulha scored off a forward pass from sophomore Alonzo Robles.Then, 10 minutes into the half, Gonzaga tied the score when Jeff Ellis headed in a high cross pass from teammate Matt Armstrong.But, at the 17-minute mark, Whitman freshman Travis Erikson grabbed an angled forward pass from Robles and sent it into the net for what proved to be the winning score.Whitman goal keeper Zander Maksic stopped 16 shots for his best game of the season, Whitmancoach Roy Anderson said.“This was the final match for our seniors (George of Kirkland and Rick Turoczy, of Boise, Idaho),” Anderson said. “Ted is the Whitman captain and our team leader. He finished the season with three goals.“And Rick is a goalie credited with 39 saves in eight games this season,” Anderson concluded. “And he was our inspiratonal leader.”
