Saints keep first by nailing NewtonNiles Saints (former Aus tin Bears) maintained first place in the National division of the Chicagoland Football league last Saturday night by vanquishing a highly regarded Newton, Iowa eleven, 34 to 17The victory gave the Saints a record of seven victories and two defeats. The invading Newton eleven. which has already clinched first in the American division of the league, also now sports a 7-2 re cord.The Iowa eleven took a 3 to 0 lead against the Saints on a 19 yard field goal in the early minutes of play. But that was the only time they held the lead Before the first period was over the Saints had tallied two touchdowns and held a 13 to 3 margin.The first of the Saints tal lies came after a 76 yard scamper by former North Park College star Ed Tank-ersley which brought the ball to the Newton four yard line. Frank Morelli went over from the two a couple of plays later.The second Saints touch down came on a pass covering 25 yards Ken Stone wasthe passer and Bob Gloppe the receiver.There was no scoring in the second period but New ton closed the gap at 13 to 10 when Bob Ousley con nected on a 20 yard aerial to Terry Kivera early in the third period That scoring maneuver apparently didn't discourage the Saints as they roared back with two more touchdowns and two more extra point kicks by Bill Springsteen Morelli went over on a four-yard run and Phil DeWald caught A J. Owens with a scoring pass, the entire play covering 54 yards.The Saints closed their scoring early in the fourth period when Frank La-Moussie, spelling the injured Tankersley, came through with a 20 yard run Tankcrlsey, incidentally,had a tremendous night of running before coming upwith a lame knee late In the second quarterThe day’s scoring ended on a Newton touchdown in the closing minutes of play, Stan Allspach catching Bob Bugl with a 28 yard pass.The Saints will close their regular season this coming afternoon against the Gladiators in Lane Tech stadium
