«L L-Uitr 4«vC» tili pciiv/i liliiiiCc WoS USUI AUUCIU; UlUUilMendleski’s defensive play earns player of week awardNorb Mendieski was named as the Oshkosh Titan player of the week by Coach Russ Young for his contribution to the Titan victory over Superior in Saturday’s Homecoming game.The Titans whipped Superior, 49-0, and Mendieski was credited with 11 individual tackles and five assists. He blocked two punts and batted down a pass and chased the Yeliowjacketquarterback on a number of occasions, “Norb had an outstanding game. He was all the things, a defensive end has to be. He blocked punts, batted passes and was just great/ Young said. “We switched him to defensive end earlier this season because he was too much football player to be sitting on the bench. He had played the position before transferring here only a few weeks.*The former Berlin High School star halfback and linebacker was instrumental in helping the Titan defense hold Superior to a minus23 yards on the ground. “He makes the big play on defense quite often/ said Young. This is the first time Mendieski has received the award but he has been in the running on most other occasions.The 6-0, 220-pound sophomore is the perfect complement to Manfred Markham, a junior, who holds down the other end of the Titans’ defensive line. Mendieski is the more wreekless of the paii' while Markham is more cautious. University of Tampa Coach Fran Curci said of the ends, “ Those t ■wo c ould play an ywher e, *“Mendieski and Markham are the best pair of defensive ends in the league/Young said. Markham stands six feet and weighs 215 pounds. Markham and Mendieski are transfers who spent their freshman seasons at scholarship schools. Mendieski played at Wyoming and Markham was at Iowa State.
