After time trials at 1:30 p. I v m„ the first heat was held at 2 p. m.m., the laurels going to Shorty Bowers. Jimy Reed won the second heat and Billy Wyncoop the third.In the five-lap match between three of the favorites, following the last heat, Jimmy Reed was first, Doug Bailey of Winchester second and Vince Conrad third.At the end of intermission, the entrants jockeyed into position on the track for the feature event. There were 13 racers on the oval, a lot of cars for those tight turns. In spite of several spinouts,;' 1 everything was still under control ] * until the 48th. lap. when Doug ! Bailey in his Bluebird spun out of control against the west turn and crashed into the fence. It looked for a moment as If he was unable to get out. but in the next Instant he climbed out of the cockpit and waved to the crowd to show that he was not injured.Bowers was in the lead all the way. followed by Carl Anderson , and Reed, who had a fierce battle for second place. Anderson nosed out Reed for the honor, the latter coming in for the show position. -when the race was called after the accident. The racer driven by Bailey was built by Kermit Batt. a local man and the builder of the Speedway.Sunday’s races close the season for this year, but track officials; plan to open ni»xt year in May, r according to Sam McCarty, an- j 1 nounecr.
