Waverly Snares Piece Of CrownBy ED McGRATHWAVERLY—The Bulldogs of this community earned a share of the championship in the first year of the Tri-Lakes League by defeating Pomona Tuesday night, 25-6.The team went into the game with a two-way tie for the top spot with Lebo. Lebo ripped Gridley, 50-0. Both finished at 6-1 in league play. Pomona is 4-3.In other league play, Williamsburg and Melvern battled to 0-0 tie .. . the second scoreless deadlock in four days for Melvern.Offensively for Waverly, the boost came from quarterback Fred Linhart, a 170-pound senior. He completed seven of 12 passes for 54 yards, and scored all four of the Bulldogs* TDs. Only one of Linhart’s aerials was intercepted. In 16 carries, he rushed for 125 yards. The Bulldogs came like lightning on their first possession of the game when the team, in eight plays, pushed for 70 yards and the first touchdown of the game. The TD came on a 3-yard run by Linhart. The PAT was no good, making the score 6-0.Waverly’s second successful tally was sparked by a fumble recovery by Rod Pock on the Pomona 19 after the Indians had just gotten a first down, their first of the game. After the recovery, two plays later, Linhard went over on a il-yard run. The second PAT attempt by the Bulldogs again failed, leaving the score at 12-0.The ’Dogs grasped five first downs—four in five plays—in spreading a drive over the first and second quarter to obtain their third TD, ending with a 1-yard run by Linhart. The drive covered 76 yards in 12 plays. Once again, the attempt at the point after the TD was no good. The entire drive was helped by a third down unnecessary roughness penalty against the Indians which pushed Waverly ahead 15 yards. The Indians’ moment of glory came on the last play of the second quarter when senior back Larry Fisher caught an 18-yard pass from quarterback Ty Hogue. The PAT effort by the Indians failed. It was a dry, quick third quarter (quick by means of 16 plays—which averages out as one play per four and one-half minutes—three time outs, two incomplete passes and one fumble) scoring-wise as both squads headed into the fourth quarter at 18-6.A beautiful final drive by Waverly began on its own 23-yard line when Linhart intercepted a pass by quarterback Lester Hoyt. Six first downs later, the Bulldogs had another touchdown when, on a set play, Linhart rolled to his right and halfback Jim Chapman grabbed a handoff. Chapman passed off to Pock, who in turn threw to Linhart from 12 yards for the six pointer. Linhart’s kick was good for the final topping,25-6.All told, Fisher led the Pomona attack with 100 yards in 15 carries to share the night’s offensive spotlight with Linhart. Defensively, end Pock and linebacker Jim Chapman shined for the winners, while tackle Don Keihl stood out for Pomona. The game left Waverly’s record at 6-1-1 for the season, while Pomona’s over-all mark is 5-3. The game snapped theIndians’ five-game winning streak.STATISTICSFirst Downs Yards Rushing Yards Passing PassesPasses Inter.
