Mt. Vernonowns two victories and has absorbed six defeats.Both the Mt. Vernon and Salemsquads have been hard hit byinjuries during the season. TheRams have had Jack Crocker, Lanny Shaw, Roger Glasco, Tom Henry, Bennie Edwards and Leon Peacock sidelined by injuries during the campaign—but Henry and Glasco should be able to go against Salem in Friday’s final.Salem Coach Thomas said today that seven of his original starting eleven, as selected in September, would be unable to play in the final game.When the Mt. Vemon-Salem series opened in 1925 the Vernois got things off on the right foot with a 39-0 triumph. Mt. Vernon continued to dominate the annual meetings which for many years were played on Armistice Day.Through the 1959 campaign, the Rams had won 21 games. Salem had 11 victories and there had been three ties.Strangely enough, the only three Ram-Salem ties came in successive years, 1928 through 1930, by scores of 6-6, 0-0 and 043.Starting in 1960, however, the worm turned. Salem knocked over some highly-favored Mt. Vernon teams.The 1960 Rams were co-champions, with Centralia, of the South Seven. Salem dumped the locals 20-13.The 1961 Rams were champions of the South Seven and were undefeated (7-0-1) going into the Salem final. Mt. Vernon had a shot at Its first unbeaten football season since the 1925 squad played and woo all four of its games. But Salem humbled the previously undefeated Rams by a . 26-7 count.Last year the Wildcats really poured it on the Vernois, gaining 343 yards from scrimmage and coasting to a 26-0 victory. Mt. Vernon never got inside Salem’s 29-yard line in the game.There is little to choose between the disappointing records stacked up by the two teams this year.! Salem has exhibited more scoring power, getting 47 points against Bridgeport and 39 against Lawrenceville — but the Rams have surrendered fewer points than the Wildcats.Mt. l emon and Salem have played two foes in common during the season. Raymond I Swartzlander climaxed anotherscoring drive with a 14 yard i TD around left end and Mike Hoyt booted the extra point. Centralia recovered their ownkickoff, and Stanley Lee crashed over from the five on the next play for the touchdown. In the second period, a 12-yard pass play from David Fouch to Kinder produced the next TD. as the kick failed.Hoyt added both third quarter .scores on runs of 64 and 10 yards respectively, but both extra point attempts failed.
