NEWS OF THE WHEELMEN.Major Taylor Lowers the World’s Kilometer Record, hut Fails at the Mile—Wheeling Notes.(Special to the Eagle.)Philadelphia. Pa.. November 5—a fine, j bright day beamed upon Major Taylor.the colored cyclist, and his cainp of pacemakers intho second clay of their assaults upon world’s records at the Wocdside Park track in the \ Quaker City yesterday. The breeze was a hit j strong for the work, but although the colored ■ hoy on his chain less missed the mile mark be- j cause his pace was not fast enough by one ! sixtieth of a minute, yet he lowered the kilo- I nietr figures held by Edouard Taylore by • four-lift hs of a second. Taylor’s mile was ' done in 1:33 2-5, or the fastest mile ever rid- i den on a track in the day time.Taylor had three quint teams ready when j he started out for the kilometer record of i 0:52 2-5, made, by Edouard Taylore.the French ; boy. at Manhattan Beach last summer. In tho ' first attempt it was arranged that the Hen-shaw qtiiiK should pace the Cr icks' quint, with Taylor on the latter machine, the Callahan quint to make the pickup. Missing the record at this trial was due to the failure of ; the Crooks team to keep close up and the Henshaw team ran away from them before the relieving quint was reached; tin* time for the : kilometer being 0:5S 3-5 or 1-5 of a second out- j side of the record. In the second trial the: Henshaw quin: carried Taylor the first lap 1 without any pacing up to the tape. Callahan’s . train doing the relieving. The pick up was a perfect, one and the watches clicked off 0:5? 3-5, 4-5 of a second under the world’s record. After succes-sfully annexing thin mark. the colored bey went at. tin* mile, but fai d. owing to the poor condition of the Crooks team. The Crooks quint paced the Henshaw train, with Taylor on the ia::er. f. r the first jap. and then swung out for Ilcr.shaw and his crew to carry the second jap alone. The Callahan quint relieved in a perfect pickup, but the best the judges could give :he record breakers was 1:33 2-5. just one S'.e.ind outside of Taylore’s world record. This record was made at Willow drove trick las; summer at night, so the colored boy’s mark yesterday was tho host ever ninth; in daylight. Today the men will go Tor the two mile record.
