High SchoolAthletic Association 3-A girlscross-country championships, held at Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex, formerly Beeson Park.As the only girls participant from The Wilson Times readership area, West, the Big East Conference champion, was unable to improve on her freshman performance, which saw her finish 15th overall in 19 minutes,26.51 seconds.Mary Grace Doggett of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons won her second straight individual title in 17:57, which was 25 seconds clear of teammate Sophie Ebi-hara. With five runners finishing in the top 20, the Crusaders easily marched to their fourth consecutive team title in 3-A following a team score of 37. Wax-haw Marvin Ridge was secondwith 73.In the 3-A boys race, Southern Nash senior Kevin Bryant finished 105th of 131 runners in 17 minutes, 58.16 seconds, while Phillip Hall of Fayetteville Terry Sanford captured the individual title after his run of 15 minutes, 7.55 seconds.Matthews Weddington ended the two-year reign of Cardinal Gibbons as the 3-A boys champions after compiling a team score of 98, which just edged the 104 of Gibbons.The Beddingfield boys, as the only area team to qualify, finished 13th of 16 teams in the 2-Achampionships as four runners established personal-best times and another tied a PR. Without the aid of a senior, sophomore Jacob Vamell finished 52nd in the 130-runner field in 17 minutes, 44.84 seconds to tie his personal best. Classmate Chris Lee was 62nd in 17 minutes, 59.79 seconds for another PR, while junior C.J. Wasilewski (104th, 19:14.28), junior Jordan Hale (110th, 19:26.02) and freshman Anthony Atkinson (113th, 19:32.53) also added personal bests for the Bruins, who have won five consecutive 2-A Eastern Plains Conference titles.Junior Isaiah Bookman was 97th in 18:54.40.“The big thing is, we have no seniors on the team, Beddingfield coach Bruce Pike said. “Everyone is coming back. The main thing was to set ourselves up for next year and give ourselves some targets. We wanted to see everyone have a good run and see that they have accomplished some things over the course of the season.”Maiden’s Corbin Boyles won the 2-A boys state title in 15 minutes, 54.86 seconds. N.C. School of Science and Math, up from the 1-A ranks, won the team championship with its total of 59.
