Overall, the Aces finished 4-6. New Albany defeated Heath Friday and Liberty Union won to forge a three-way tie for the title between those three teams. The Blue Ace seniors were committed to going out on a high note, considering the season was not as successful as anticipated.“It was the last game of the season and we had a lot to prove,” said defensive stalwart Dusty Sanna, who ended the game with nine tackles on defense, and 21 yards rushing as fullback. “Everybody stepped up with their best effort.”Clay, at strong safety along with his offensive chores, agreed. “We had to take it out for a win,” he said. “This was one we will remember for the rest of our lives.”Clay added that a victory was necessary to push the GHS program into next season.“We talked all week about the program,” said Coach Mike Hensley. “We decided were not rebuilding, we re just reloading.”Clay, who has seen limited action at tailback this year, gained 96 yards in seven rushes and had accumulated 101 before he was pushed back six yards on a fourth quarter carry.“I didn’t know I would get the ball that much, said Clay, crediting Quarterback Matt Foster forthe right sideline for a 26-yardtouchdown with 7:50 left in the half.Olmy Olmstead kicked his sec-ond field goal of the season on the Aces' next series, a nine-play affair that took GHS to the seven with 2:38 before halftime. But Heights showed signs of life when A.J. Matlock, who accumulated 193 return yards in the game for his team’s only serious offensive display, cashed in 85 of them for a touchdown on the ensuing kick-off to cut the deficitto just 10-6.A 25-yard Foster-Joel Tallman connection started GHS off on its next series, and Shaw caught a 13-yarder to get GHS to the Heights 24. Following a GHS penalty Shaw carried for six yards, and Foster passed to Crenshaw for a 13-yard touchdown play, and for a 2-point pass conversion play for a more comfortable 18-6 halftime advantage.A John Ykema interception at the Heights 38 got the GHSoffense in gear again for the third quarter. Crenshaw caught a 14-yard Foster pass, Clay scam-his second touchdown. After still another three-and-out Hornet series, Matt Havens caught a 21-yard pass at the Granville 37, and two plays later Clay broke loose for a 63-yard score with 1:53 left in the third quarter.Shaw had his best effort of the season with 97 all-purpose yards including three receptions for 36 yards. Foster connected on 17 of 36 passes for 218 yards, with Crenshaw catching six for 80 and Joel Tallman six for 60.The GHS defense did not allow Heights its lone first down until the fourth quarter, on a short third down run by 331-pound lineman Rufus Hancock.Freshman nose tackle Zack McKenzie led the Aces, defensively, with 10 tackles including six solos.
